GLOBE ENSO (El Niño Southern Oscillation) Campaign has been formulated to engage students in determining where and how much El Niño affects local places and to put students in contact with their local environment.
The GOES-R: Global Weather Watchers K-14 project encourages students to share weather reports from around the world. Through data collection, learning activities, and comparisons to geostationary satellites, students will learn firsthand the connectedness of global weather patterns and global transport systems.

#LakeVictoria #LearningExpedition Day Five This morning we got an early start! We drove from Homa Bay to the Sirua Aulo High School. When we arrived to the school, the students greeted us by singing and dancing a Massai song. You can see the video of their impressive greeting. We met Mr. Emmanuel Tasur, the school director, who actually visited with Dr. Tony Murphy at the GLOBE Implementation Office in August! Paul Kucera, Martin, and Charles installed the #3d printed #weather station and were helped by the Peter and Jairus, the Sirua Aulo teachers that traveled with us all week, while the rest of the team met with the students. Ylliass did the cloud protocol and site definition with the students, and we toured the school’s laboratory. After the school visit, we went to Massai Mara for an evening safari tour to observe animals, such as elephants, ostrich, hyenas, zebra, rabbits, giraffes, monkeys, birds, gazelles, and many other animals. As the Oman team leaves tomorrow, we did a goodbye ceremony to share what this week meant for us, thank Charles and Mark for their work, and the GLOBE Africa Regional Director Mark Brettenny gave certificates of participation. #LakeVictoria #LearningExpedition Day Four This morning we woke up and enjoyed the view from our hotel overlooking Homa Bay. We then stopped up at Homa Boys School to pick up some of the GLOBE students, and then travelled to the Tom Mboya Boys High School in Rusinga Island. We walked to the lake and did the hydrology and atmosphere protocols. The Homa Boys School students demonstrated how to use the LabQuest 2 instruments donated by YLACES to the students of Tom Mboya School. After that, we joined Martin, Paul, Charles, and Kristin as they installed the #USAID #3Dprinted #weatherstation. Paul shared how @Raspberry_Pi works with the boys and how they can access their atmosphere data and compare it to the other schools with #USAID #3Dprinted #weatherstations. The GLOBE #LakeVictoria #LearningExpedition team shared the inspirational message of GLOBE, including peace, citizenship, collaborating internationally on environmental issues, volunteering, and #STEM careers. We finished the school visit with a meeting with the school director, who was appreciative with our visit and thanked us for being there. #LakeVictoria #LearningExpedition Day Three This morning we traveled to a local tea factory to learn about the process of farming and manufacturing black tea. We then traveled to Homa Bay. We picked up students and teachers from the Homa Bay Boys Secondary School and went to Lake Victoria, where we did the hydrology and mosquito protocol. The students were very excited about receiving their LabQuest 2 equipment donation from #YLACES. They conducted investigations on the water of Lake Victoria earlier this year, so they look forward to submitting to the GLOBE International Virtual Science Fair 2017. #LakeVictoria #LearningExpedition Day Two This morning, we split up into two groups. Group one, lead by Ylliass Lewani, (GLOBE Alumni Africa Coordinator) and master trainer candidate for the hydrology and soil protocol, supported by Mark Brettenny, went to Lake Elementaita for an introduction to the atmosphere and hydrology protocols. During that time, Paul, Martin, Kristin, and Charles went back to the Naivasha Girls School to install the #NCAR #USAID 3D-weather station. Charles guided the teachers to define their atmosphere site and introduced them to the protocols. The students were very curious about their new automated 3D-printed weather station. They asked lots of questions about the weather and climate, and learned how weather data and forecasts help the decision-making process on societal impact issues, such as agriculture. In the afternoon, the groups joined up again and went to the Kipsigis Girls' High School for a presentation. We met with the Principal Juliana Kirui and had a wonderful talk with 200 students. Charles introduced the group to the students, talked about the importance of GLOBE in Kenya and in the world, and the benefits of participating in GLOBE to the students. Nadhirah (Country Coordinator GLOBE Oman) gave an enthusiastic and motivational talk about the international nature of the program. Ylliass invited them to join the GLOBE Alumni Network when the graduate from secondary school. Lawrence from the Kenyan Space Agency talked about remote sensing and the value of student-gathered ground truthing data for#GPM, #SMAP, and #CloudSat satellites. Paul and Martin shared the science of their 3D-printed weather station. Kristin from GIO invited the students to participate in the La Niña Campaign and the International Virtual Science Symposium. Mark Brettenny (GLOBE Africa Regional Coordinator) encouraged the teachers to support their students to participate in the International Virtual Science Fair, and the value of participating in NASA's science and education program.
