GOES-R Mission

The Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites – R Series (GOES-R) program is a collaborative development and acquisition effort between the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). The advanced spacecraft and instrument technology employed by the GOES-R series provides scientists with important observations of environmental phenomena that directly affect public safety, protection of property and the United State's economic health and prosperity.

The GOES-R Mission utilizes the Space to Earth: Earth to Space (SEES) model. To support the mission, students can use standard GLOBE Atmospheric Protocols to collect ground-truth data to compare with satellite imagery. Students can also investigate and document hazardous and severe weather in their region while utilizing the GLOBE Visualization Tool to create real- or near real-time satellite imagery to create new data layers. These new data layers help students and scientists study and investigate earthly phenomenon from space.

The world is warming, global sea levels are rising and some types of extreme weather events are becoming more frequent and severe. These changes have already impacted almost every region of the world and many sectors of the economy. Because of the severity of impacts, researchers need reliable scientific information about how the climate is changing in order to predict future impacts and formulate effective responses.

Students, teachers and the general public are often unsure about the difference between weather and climate. This leads to confusion when current weather events such as a cold snap or major snow storm are viewed as conflicting with scientifically-verified studies on climate change. Currently, the data streaming from the environmental satellite array helps scientists monitor weather and contribute to a long-term climate record. This data is a crucial element for climate investigations it is collected using well-calibrated instruments so that it can be easily compared over decades. This type of scientific data gathering is an example of geospatial intelligence or environmental intelligence.

The Global Weather Watchers K-14 project is designed to help students and teachers dispel this weather/climate confusion and is a collaborative initiative implemented in the GLOBE Classroom. The project provides students with and a chance to develop content, collaborate in data collection, conduct joint investigations and learn from one another about how weather varies around the world. Through these activities, students can better understand the interconnectivity of global weather patterns.
