Dear All,

Lenka Hajkova, the scientist from Czech Hydrometeorological Institute sent us news about phenological changes in the Czech Republic during the period January - March 2018:

The vegetation season in the Czech Republic starts very slowly
Relatively warm weather in January resulted in an early flowering of Common Hazel at altitudes under 400 meters above sea level. Flowering began a month earlier, which is quite early. On the other hand, during some winters in the last few years, the Hazel started to flower even earlier.

In the lowest attitudes, the flowering of Hazel ended in February. The end of February brought heavy frosts that to a small extent damaged catkins of Hazels that were still flowering at that time. The frost damaged to a small extent also flowers of other species - Common Snowdrop and Common Alder. All three species are very durable and tolerable to such weather extremes.

Due to the cold weather at the end of winter season, vegetation development of some species in the Czech Republic is delayed up to fourteen days.

Picture: Catkins of Common Alder on the bank of the Vltava River in Prague damaged by frost.
