Activity 4

The graph below shows average leaf length for all 4 leaves we observed during the spring 2021 campaign.

Students compared our budburst dates with Gozo College Middle School in Malta. Our fig leaves had budburst at the end of the March (between 17th and 30th of March). Fig on Malta had budburst between in late February and early March (25th of February and 4th of March).

Student's hypothesis is that the reason for the difference in budburst dates is mostly because of differences in longitude. Distance between Maltese school and school in Rijeka is 1,046.54 km. The climate on Malta is warmer and plants can grow leaves earlier.

Reason for this is that the old fig tree is close to tall school building. New tree is on the edge of a small park and at a distance from any tall structures. Students have voted, and the name chosen for the tree is traditional Croatian female name "Dunja". For the continuation of data and comparison purposes we will also continue to observe the old fig tree, "Fig1".

GrowApp photo of Dunja, and a photo of Fig1 are attached.

GPS coordinates: N 45°20'13" E 14°25'32"
Altitude: 61 m
Latin name of the tree species: Ficus carica
Name the tree: Dunja

GPS coordinates: N 45°20'19" E 14°25'26"
Altitude: 85 m
Latin name of the tree species: Ficus carica
Name the tree: Fig1
