Hello from Xrobb l-Għaġin Nature Park in South East Malta.

We are following 3 branches on 2 African Tamarisk trees, the only deciduous tree within the park. Since last year we observed that budburst had probably occurred well before the start of the spring campaign, this year we started the observations much earlier... on the 10th of January!

You know what? Even so early, the trees under observation already had some new leaves of a considerable length! However, this time round, a lot more buds looked like they were still dormant. This guess work was right!

The first bud opened somewhere during the last 2 weeks of January when the exact date could not be noted because of COVID quarantine matters!

On the 30th of January when the new leaf was discovered, it was 5mm long and one which was already there from the first day of the observations had grown from 3.5cm to 6 cm long.

More on further budburst in our next post!
Esther Sammut Carbone
