Greetings from Prelog, Croatia! Although we had hoped that May would bring some warm weather and sunny days, it has shown its real nature, so it may rain, hail, or be really cold. The temperatures have been around 8 to 10 degrees Celsius this week, and our birch trees are still waiting for sun and warmth. The leaves are growing slowly, and they measure 34, 32, 30, and 35 mm. Hoping for more sun and warmer days in the weeks to come!

Our birch tree is in its full beauty at the moment and the leaves are growing, so here are their lengths: 32 mm, 30 mm, 28 mm and 34.

Hello everyone from GLOBE students and teachers in Srednja škola Prelog! The weather is still chilly, but we finally have some sun and our birch leaves have started to grow. The first leaf is 30 mm, the second 28, the third 25 and the fourth is 32. Last week we visited the town's council and presented our work on the campaign, talked about the town's carbon cycle and the need to plant more trees and parks. They have started work on the new park near the primary school and we are very excited about it!

Hello everyone, greetings from Croatia. The weather here is still pretty unstable. The temperatures are around 5 degrees in the morning and up to 10 during the day and there is not much sun so the leaves have only just started to come out. The length of the leaves: leaf 1: 13 mm, leaf 2: 15 mm, leaf 3: 10 mm, leaf 4: 17 mm. The weather forecast says that we can expect more cold weather in the next week or so, but we hope that this will change and that our birch trees will be full of leaves soon!

Hello everyone! We continue to monitor our birch trees as the students have completed Carbon Around Me activity for out town. They concluded that we have a small amount of trees and parks in our town and that we should do something about it so we plan to talk to the town council about planting new trees.

Hello everyone! Our birch trees finally have small leaves: leaf 1- 3.2mm, leaf 2- 2.5 mm, leaf 3- 3.4, leaf 4- 2.9. The temeprature is 12 degrees and it is rainy and windy, has been the same for the last three days and because of that, the leaves are slowly growing, so we are waiting for the sun and some higher temperature to see the real growth. The students are working on Carbon around us activity and we will share the results next week. Have a great weekend!

Hello from Prelog, Croatia. We continue to monitor two birch trees near our school. The weather has been pretty changeable, and the mornings are still freezing, around zero degrees Celsius. The temperature today is 16 degrees Celsius and it is raining at the moment so my photo of the buds is pretty dark and blury, but I hope that you will be able to see that the buds are swelling and soon we will have small leaves.

Hello everyone, greetings from Prelog, Croatia. We have been having a couple of nice days, with temperatures ranging from 2 degrees Celsius in the morning to 18 degrees Celsius in the afternoon. We are continuing to monitor two birch trees, one in front of the school and the other in the school's garden. The school's location is: Latitude 46.33737° or 46° 20' 15" north, Longitude 16.6104° or 16° 36' 37" east. All the leaves we monitor are swelling, and we expect budburst within a week or so.

Greetings from Prelog for one last time this autumn. Today it has been cloudy with rain and snow, and the temperatures around 3 degrees Celsius. Our birch tree has been left without leaves and is ready for winter sleep. Till spring, holiday greetings with all the best wishes for the new year!

Greetings from Prelog, Croatia, where winter is quickly approaching and temperatures are almost zero degrees Celsius daily. Our birch tree today had only one leaf, and that was the first leaf that we have been observing for the past two months. Its color is 5YR 7/12. Since it is very windy today, we believe that it will also soon be gone, and the tree will remain bare until spring.

Greetings from our school birch trees. As the days are getting shorter and shorter and the weather is getting cold and foggy, our leaves are becoming more yellowish, but they are still here and we hope that winter is still not around the corner. Now, the colour of all leaves is 5G 6/2. Until next week, have a good weekend and spend it somewhere outside while you still can!

Hello again from sunny Prelog, Croatia. The temperatures are still pretty hight for this time of the year, today it is 19 degrees Celsius, but our brich leaves are starting to change its colour, some more than others. The three leaves are 2.5Y 8/12 and one is still pretty green, at 5GY 5/10. Bye for now!

Greetings from Srednja škola Prelog, Croatia. For the last week or so we had beautiful and warm weather in Croatia with temperatures up to 25 degrees Celsius, but today it was 12 degrees Celsius and the colour of the leaves on our birch has started changing. The students say that our leaves are all the same colour, and it is 5GY: 6/10. Since it will get colder soon, we will continue monitoring the leaves more closely every couple days and report the changes.

The weather has been nice so we could spend much time outdoors with our birch tree, which we have followed through numerous campaigns. The leaves are very long this autumn, the average is 14 cm and they are still beautifully green.

Greetings from still pretty chilly Croatia! We are still following our two birch trees and we have done two measurements within 3 weeks. Here are the measurements:
1st April, temperature was 8 degrees celsius
Birch tree in front of the school: leaf 1: 27 mm, leaf 2: 18 mm, leaf 3: 26 mm, leaf 4: 25 mm, leaf 4: 31 mm
Birch in the school yard: leaf 1: 42 mm, leaf 2: 44 mm, leaf 3: 31 mm, leaf 4: 43 mm, leaf 5: 49 mm
19th April, temperature is 13 degrees celsius
Birch tree in front of the school: leaf 1: 42 mm, leaf 2: 28 mm, leaf 3: 39 mm, leaf 4: 32 mm, leaf 5: 43 mm

Activity 2-Srednja škola Prelog

Greetings from Srednja škola Prelog, Croatia, one more time. We are continuing to monitor our two birch trees (in our school's backyard and in front of the school) and our trees are finally starting swelling and we are looking forward to budburst really soon. The photos were taken on the 28th of March and the temperature was 6 degrees celsius with strong wind.

Spring trees campaign- Activity 1

Greetings from Srednja škola Prelog, Croatia. For this campaign we have chosen two birch trees (Betula pendula) in the vicinity of our school. Our latitude is 46.324158N and 16.605362E. Elevation is 152 metres and both trees are of aproximately same height and circumference, the one in front of the school is 4.3 meters heigh and has circumference of 47 cm, while the one in the school yard is 4.5 meters high and has circumference of 50 cm. Buds on both of the trees are still dormant. We are attaching a few pictures of our trees and the buds.
