The first budburst was observed on 26th February 2025!

Activity 1 - Fig Tree

Greetings from Gozo College Agius de Soldanis Middle School!

We are very excited to be part of this campaign for the 7th year!

For the Spring 2025 campaign, we will be observing and monitoring the growth of a Fig Tree.

As you can see in the photo, the fig tree has already awakened! With temperatures rising, some students are already dressed in summer clothes.Regards

Fruit on our Fig Tree!

Dear GLOBE community

Hope you are enjoying warmer, sunnier weather in your countries! Malta is getting warmer, not that it was a cold season for us, and windy with lots of fine sand in the air coming from the Sahara Desert!

Our fig tree is growing big leaves! But that's not all.....it is also growing fruit.

We are so excited to watch our fig tree grow so beautifully.

Spring is around the corner and our fig tree is waking up from its winter sleep. This year we did not have a cold winter and our trees did not get a good sleep.

Today we visited our fig tree and selected a branch that we will be monitoring throughout this campaign.

The air temperature today marks 20.3 degrees Celsius.

Greetings from Gozo. We are thrilled to share the news that our fig tree has made budburst. We noted the first budburst on 6th March. Days are getting pretty warm, temperatures are now 19 degrees Celsius!

Meet our Fig Tree

Hello everyone,

Greetings from sunny Gozo! We are very happy to be participating in the GLOBE Spring phenology Campaign. Since we do not have a garden in our school we planted the fig tree in a big planter.

Our fig tree is still very young and we are closely monitoring it twice a week!

Following a very dry period our islands finally received some rain! We have some exciting news to share with you....Our fig tree made budburst on 10th March. The students are really happy and can't wait to see our tree bloom.

Spring is in the air and it's time to observe the waking up of our Fig Tree. Today the students chose the branch and already notices some swelling!
Air temperature at time of observation was 16.1 degrees Celsius and the coordinates of the tree are 36.0239N, 14.1444E.

Dear GLOBE community,

The weather in the Maltese Islands is finally cool. There was a sudden drop in air temperature by 5 degrees Celsius with day time temperatures reaching 15 degrees Celsius. All of the four leaves we are monitoring are still attached to the branch however we noticed an increase in the brown spots.

Hello GLOBE Phenology Community, greetings from Gozo!!

It's almost 2 months from the start of Autumn and our fig tree is still in leaf. The weather in Malta is still relatively hot with day time temperatures ranging between 20 and 23 degrees Celsius.

We will continue monitoring the tree for leaf colour change and keep you updated.

This is our last post where we are sharing the measurements of our Fig Tree.

The Spring Campaign once again gave us a great opportunity to learn about the Fig Tree and spend meaningful time outside the classroom. It was an enriching learning experience for my students, especially the new ones, to learn about The GLOBE Program, make observations and be directly involved in data collection.

Days are now gettting longer and warmer with day temperatures reaching 20 degrees Celsius.

We are observing our Fig Tree twice a week and we were very surprised to notice that all of our 4 leaves are now measurable!! A drastic change on 3 days as you can see in the photos below.

Measurements recorded on Monday 8th March are;
Leaf 1 - 11mm
Leaf 2 - 13mm
Leaf 3 - 20mm
Leaf 4 - 30mm
Air Temperature at time of observation was 16.5 degrees Celsius

Greetings from sunny Gozo, Malta. During this campaign we are observing a Fig Tree. At our school we do not have a garden and our fig tree is planted in a big pot.

GLOBE students labelled 4 swollen leaves on one of the branches. And ....

Thursday 25th February one of ours leaves made bud burst!! Spring is in the air

Air temperature at time of observation was 18.6 degrees Celsius.

Our Fig Tree in Autumn

Hello everyone

Hope you are staying safe. Our last leaf went to brown colour on Friday 23rd October and yesterday it was on the groud. So all of our 4 leaves have now fallen. In the photo you can see the last leaf we were observing which is now on the ground.

The weather here is getting cooler with NW winds and some occasional rain.

Hello

Here is another update of our observations. Another leaf fell and now we only have 1 leaf to observe colour change.

Air is cooler with max temperatures reaching 22 degrees Celsius.

Below is a photo of our last leaf attached to the branch 'Leaf 1' and a screenshot from GLOBE data visualization of our leaf colour change observations.
