Green up in Biotechnical school Maribor, Slovenia - Fig trees

Hello!
This year we observed and measured fig trees at two locations. At the Skoke location, we measured for the third year in a row, and at the Mozirje location, we measured for the second time.
Skoke: N - 46.4859, E - 15.6954, Elevation 261 m.
Mozirje: N - 46.348283, E - 15.000235, Elevation 406 m.
Fig tree in Mozirje have been observed since February 8th. They completed the measurement on June 13th, fig tree in Skoke since February 9th to June 15th.
Skoke - Leaf length: Leaf 1 - 168, Leaf 2 - 137 mm, Leaf 3 - 146 mm, Leaf 4 - 145.
Mozirje - Leaf length: Leaf 1 – 195, Leaf 2 – 195, Leaf 3 – 106, Leaf 4 – 85.

Skoke: Fig tree

Mozirje: Fig tree

The average temperature during the observation period in Skoke was 11,1 °C, and 305,3 mm of precipitation fell during this time, while in Mozirje the average temperature was 10,1 °C, and 342,8 mm of precipitation fell.
In Skoke, the leaves developed evenly, while in Mozirje two grew very quickly and two very slowly. In the end, the difference was large. This is also the reason why the leaves were on average larger in Skoke.

Green up in Biotechnical school Maribor, Slovenia - Walnut tree

Hello!
This year we observed and measured a walnut tree for the first time. (Skoke: 46.485874, 15.696532, Elevation 263 m).
Walnut tree have been observed since February 16th. They completed the measurement on June 14th. There was a frost in the spring, so two buds froze.
Leaf length 2025: Leaf 1 – Lost, Leaf 2 - 197 mm, Leaf 3 - 206 mm, Leaf 4 – Lost.

In 2025, the average temperature during the observation period was 11,7 °C, and 286,6 mm of precipitation fell during this time.

Activity 4
As part of the GLOBE Carbon Activity 4, we learned how trees and plants participate in the global carbon (CO₂) cycle. We discovered that forests act as a “living pump,” constantly exchanging carbon dioxide with the atmosphere.
🌿 Key facts we learned:
               •             During spring and summer, plants absorb CO₂ from the air through photosynthesis – during this time, CO₂ concentration decreases.
               •             During autumn and winter, plants photosynthesize less and respire more, which causes the CO₂ level in the atmosphere to increase.
               •             This pattern appears as a “zig-zag” line on the CO₂ graph from Mauna Loa (Hawaii).
               •             This natural cycle is called “Earth’s breathing.”
📊 Video analysis:
We watched the animation “Watching the Earth Breathe.” The video shows how CO₂ concentration and vegetation change throughout the year. We paused the video at:
               •             0:02 (end of March) → vegetation starts growing in the Northern Hemisphere.
               •             0:07 (end of August) → photosynthesis is at its peak.
               •             0:10 (end of November) → CO₂ rises again as most plants become dormant.
🌍 In another video, “How Much Carbon do Plants Take from the Atmosphere?”, we learned that different plants absorb different amounts of CO₂ depending on the type of vegetation and climate conditions.



When taking photos due to the lack of signal, it appears as if the cherry tree was photographed in different places. It's always the same location.

Hello everyone! 😊
Here we are, joining in - after the campaign has already started.
📎 Attached are some photos of our trees and the measurements we took.We began observing the leafing of our school cherry tree 🍒 and fig tree on March 6th, 2025, and completed our observations on June 12th, 2025, as that was also the end of our school year.
The cherry tree reached budburst around March 27th, while the fig tree budburst occurred a bit earlier, around March 20th. 🌱Six fifth-grade girls participated in the research, and they even measured the leaves on their own at times.
Our favorite part was tasting the first cherries 🍒 from our little cherry tree, which bore fruit for the first time this school year! 😋I will soon upload all the data to the GLOBE database. 🌍Thank you once again, on behalf of myself and my students, for such interesting projects. 🙏This is my last year working in school, as I am moving to a new position.
So I would like to use this opportunity to say goodbye 👋 — but I’m sure I’ll continue working with GLOBE in my new role as well! 😊

Greetings from Selyshchensky Lyceum, Ukraine.
We have finished observing the growth of leaves on the trees. We compared data from the previous year, 2024, and found that leaf growth was slow this year due to temperature fluctuations and lack of precipitation.

Hello from Ivan Kukuljević Elementary School in Belišće! This is the graphical representation of the results of our fig tree greening measurements.

During the Spring 2025 Campaign, we collaborated with Prirodoslovna i grafička škola, Rijeka (Croatia).

The students analysed green-up of both fig trees. The tree in Rijeka had an earlier budburst (mid-March), and the leaves stopped growing earlier (early May). In comparison, the tree in Belišće had a later buburst (early April) and the leaves stopped growing in mid-May.
These differences can can be explained by geographical lattitude, since the Belišće is situated approx. 100 km north in reference to Rijeka.

Hello!
We have been monitoring the development of hazel for the third year in a row. We have been observing the same branch all three years. (Skoke: N 46.4859, E 15.6968, Elevation 263 m).
Hazel have been observed in year 2025 since February 6th. They completed the measurement on May 29th.
Green up measurement results from 2023 to 2025:
Leaf length 2025: Leaf 1 - 92, Leaf 2 - 87 mm, Leaf 3 - 93 mm, Leaf 4 - 104.
Leaf length 2024: Leaf 1 – 78, Leaf 2 – 82, Leaf 3 – 74, Leaf 4 – 72.
Leaf length 2023: Leaf 1 – lost, Leaf 2 – 82, Leaf 3 – 77, Leaf 4 – 62.

This year, the average temperature during the measurements was the lowest (8.9 °C), in 2024 it was 11.5 °C and in 2023 11.3 °C. There was a similar trend in precipitation. This year, 227.8 mm of precipitation fell during this period, in 2024 272.6 mm and by far the most in 2023, as much as 389.8 mm. Despite less precipitation and lower temperatures, the leaves developed the most this year. This year they are 17.5 mm longer than in 2024 and as much as 20.3 mm longer than in 2023. From these results, we can conclude that temperature does not have the most significant influence on the length of hazel leaves, as the amount of precipitation does not. However, it is certainly important that the rain fell very evenly and there were no dry periods in between.

It was interesting to gaze at our birch tree during this few months. It was like a voluntarily obligation to the children. They were amazed with the growth of the leaves. It is something to do over again. They were like real researchers.

Hello from Preko, Croatia. Our fig tree . Our fig tree has finished the leafing process. We compared the data with school located further north and south of us. We concluded that our results were similar and that our fig trees started and finished leafing at similar time.

Dear GLOBE community

We observed the first budburst on our fig tree quite early, on 6th March 2025! The air temperature in Malta is warm compared to other European countries and this explains why trees wake up early here
