One of the things that I find the most inspiring about The GLOBE Program , is the rich collaboration that it enables us to have with each other. Speaking for myself, I now have friends literally all around the globe, because of my engagement and interaction with GLOBE. I thought I would take a little time to write about a very inspiring intergenerational collaboration that I have found particularly enriching.
During the virtual GLOBE Annual Meeting in 2021, I was asked by a participant if we could meet up in a virtual room and chat. I was astonished to meet the extremely vibrant ...

One of the best things about GLOBE is that students learn about science by doing science! Not only do students engage in real data collection, but there are also opportunities for them to conduct research projects that are interesting to them and that focus on answering questions that are meaningful and relevant to them. This semester we were very fortunate to collaborate with a high school intern who feels very passionate about advocating for accessibility, and who has also been learning a lot about clouds! Naudia’s research question was “How can blind and sighted students learn about ...

Have you ever wondered why NASA has chosen to follow water ? NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope has captured the distinct signature of water outside our solar system. NASA's Artemis program is examining the presence of water on the Moon in advance of sending and establishing a sustainable human presence there. The answer is simple - water is key to life as we know it, including on planet Earth. Only 2.5% of the water on Earth is fresh, and only a tiny fraction of that is available for use. NASA and other space agencies’ remote sensing satellites provide vital information to ...

The Summer 2022 NASA SEES Internship program was a memorable one for the GLOBE Mission EARTH (GME) Team! The 6-week period of hard work, commitment, and dedication by all members led to creative and outstanding research projects from both the Urban Heat Island Effect (UHIE) and the Air Quality Initiative (AQI) Teams. The wide geographical spread of the NASA SEES students allows them to take observations using different GLOBE protocols across the United States.
The AQI Team led by GLOBE Mission EARTH Research Assistant Sara Mierzwiak and GME Teacher Janene Smith mentored a group of 7 ...

The GLOBE Program, through its various platforms such as the International Virtual Student Symposium (IVSS), Student Research Symposium (SRS), Regional Meetings has always highlighted relevant student research accomplishments and outputs. The GLOBE activities, however, are not just limited to students and teachers. We are pleased to know that retired professionals can also work and contribute meaningfully to the GLOBE database as citizen scientists. Let us get to know one cloud enthusiast from India, Om Prakash Gupta.
Om Prakash Gupta is one of the most active citizen scientists that ...

My involvement in the Stem Enhancement in Earth Science (SEES) program started sometime around early spring 2021. The involvement was preceded by a strong recommendation from Dr. Kevin Czajkowski, PI, GLOBE Mission Earth, The University of Toledo.
Indeed, to me as a member of the GLOBE International STEM Network (GISN), my participation in SEES became an opportunity to invoke the GISN mandate which includes to mentor and inspiring ...

This year, the GLOBE International Virtual Science Symposium (IVSS)’s topic is focused on Engineering Solutions for a Changing Climate . I believe it may be a bit overwhelming to think of such a big topic, wondering where to even start brainstorming solutions regarding our changing climate. But my colleague and friend Juan Felipe Restrepo just reminded me that when doing research, we don’t need to start from scratch! We can build on the knowledge that has been gathered by those who have studied a topic before us.
I happen to be extremely lucky when it comes to looking for people ...

I find it hard to believe it’s been two years since GLOBE invited the community to apply to become part of a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Task Force! One of the most important recommendations made by the Task Force was the development and implementation of a DEI assessment survey that helped set up a baseline: we needed to become informed about the state of DEI across GLOBE, and we needed to hear from GLOBE community’s members about necessary resources to make GLOBE more diverse, equitable, and inclusive.
To work on the assessment survey, a special committee assembled from ...

For many of us within the GLOBE community, this is a joyful season with many celebrations around us. I was lucky to have the opportunity to share about holiday traditions with members from the GLOBE Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Working Group a few days ago. Not only was it interesting to learn about how my colleagues celebrate different holidays, but it was also exciting to find about common traditions among physically distant countries!
Reflecting on diverse celebrations around this time, prompted me to share about a special day that is taking place in less than a month: World ...

Did you know that NASA's Earth-observing satellites gather data that is being used by people all over the world to help respond to a variety of challenges? The 2022 GLOBE International Virtual Science Symposium is focusing on "Engineering Solutions for a Changing Climate". In this blog, I will share some information about the ways that Faisal Hossain, a Civil and Environmental Engineering Professor at the University of Washington, is using engineering and solving environmental issues through engineering solutions.

I had the pleasure to meet Jodie Harnden a few days ago. We were introduced by my former mentor, Dr. Margaret Pippin, who leads GLOBE’s U.S. Air Quality Student Research Campaign. Jodie is a teacher at Sunridge Middle School, in Pendleton, OR. She has been a GLOBE teacher since 2010 and has always looked for ways to teach science by having their students ‘DO SCIENCE’! Jodie and her students have been particularly involved in researching air quality, and Jodie shared with me how it has been a bit surprising for her students to discover that even though wildfires cause air quality issues in ...

Background
Remote working and remote learning presented challenges to us all. As a Master Trainer in Colombia, Juan Felipe Restrepo Mesa faced and overcame his share of challenges when working with a new group of educators from rural areas. Most of the training material and the tests that need to be answered were in English. This, of course, means that citizen scientists who do not speak English were prevented from making their contributions living in those areas where GLOBE Observer Mosquito Habitat Mapper's contributions are essential.
Juan Felipe had to set up a MEET ...

Today I had the privilege to talk to Dr. Elena Sparrow, a valued member of the GLOBE community since 1996! Dr. Sparrow lives in Alaska and is committed to working on bringing relevant and meaningful learning for youth in rural villages. She introduces the scientific method without ever disregarding the knowledge the youth have acquired from their parents, their elders, and their community. As Dr. Sparrow pointed out during our conversation: “Accessing multiple knowledge systems allows for a richer experience”. She constantly tries to bring GLOBE and NASA assets like satellite data and ...
