Stars and STEM Stories

Two GLOBE trainers have undertaken a bike trip from El Paso, Texas to the southern tip of Latin America at Patagonia. Their goal is to help promote science education and an appreciation of the environment. Karen Engelke from El Paso and Daniel Gomez from Juarez, Mexico are part of the La Cruzada Ciclista por un Mundo Mejor (CCMM), or Cyclists Crusade for a Better World, Team. Along their route they will be stopping at schools and training selected GLOBE protocols.  >>

GLOBE Canada, through a proposal by the Yukon Teachers Association, has been awarded a three-year $45,000 grant by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC)'s Promoscience competition.  >>

Croatian GLOBE schools celebrated International Water Day March 22 by raising public awareness of the importance of water protection through hydrology measurements. One project, designed by students from Srednja skola Prelog was hailed by local water authorities and the news media as a great success worth repeating every year.  >>

Teachers from six Latin American GLOBE countries and Spain came together under the GLOBE umbrella recently during two October training workshops in Chile and Argentina, which coincided with the Southern Hemisphere's springtime.  >>

Thanks to the GLOBE program, some young scholars recently learned that studying science can really take them places. In October 2002, six students and two teachers from two GLOBE schools traveled to Houston, Texas, to participate in the World Space Congress (WSC), an event organizers describe as the largest scientific, technical and space exhibition of the decade.  >>

New York City may be known for skyscrapers and busy streets, but K-12 students and teachers are finding and creating GLOBE study sites all over the metro area. At an all-day Science Institute put on Jan. 9 by Queens College for the New York City Department of Education and the GLOBE-NY Metro Partnership, GLOBE teachers and students wowed teachers, science coordinators and educators from all over the New York metro area with descriptions of their GLOBE implementation ideas.  >>

Students and teachers from seven countries "met and measured" for four days during the "GLOBE Learning Expedition" in Vang, Norway, Sept. 5 - 8. It was the largest GLOBE event of the year, with participants coming from Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Latvia, Norway, Poland and the Czech Republic.  >>
