GLOBE and the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS)

In the United States, The National Research Council, the National Science Teachers Association, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and Achieve released the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) in April 2013. The National Academies of Science released the Framework for K-12 Science Education in 2011. Following the release of the Framework, a team of forty-one writers with guidance from twenty-six state review teams developed the Next Generation Science Standards.

For Teachers and Schools:

For Districts and States:

Interested in providing schools and teachers an accessible curriculum to address the NGSS Framework? The GLOBE community developed this "Guide to Connections between The GLOBE Program and the Next Generation Science Standards" to demonstrate the connections between GLOBE protocols and resources to the NGSS Framework. From the GLOBE community:

GLOBE students, educators, and scientists collaborate to ask questions about how the world works, plan and carry out investigations, and use all of the other practices of science to gain a better understanding of Earth systems.  GLOBE students conduct investigations of their own local area as they build their understanding of core ideas and crosscutting concepts.  The results of a student's GLOBE efforts are meaningful contributions to a global scientific endeavor.  For the past 18 years the GLOBE Program has been an exemplary application of learning science by doing science.  It is exciting to see the values of GLOBE expressed in the Next Generation Science Standards.

The Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) provide a new way of looking at science education.  They emphasize the practices of science, the crosscutting concepts of science and the content knowledge of science.  GLOBE provides an excellent example of the NGSS in action.  A GLOBE student demonstrates the practices of science as they collect and analyze data.  A GLOBE student's learning takes place within the context of the science disciplines of Earth, Physical and Life Science.  GLOBE students understand the interrelationships of the science disciplines through "big ideas" of science that crosscut all of the sciences.  Finally, students in GLOBE continually apply their science knowledge in meaningful endeavors and demonstrate that the observations and learning's that take place in GLOBE demonstrate that what we learn about our environment can be used in the relationships between engineering, technology, and the applications of science.
