The GLOBE DEIA Working Group seeks to advance the principles of diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility within GLOBE, advancing its mission and vision towards full participation in GLOBE for the broadest possible spectrum of the human community without obstruction.

Vision

The Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment (GLOBE) Program is committed to promoting a culture of belonging with its community of students, teachers, scientists and citizen scientists in order for all to contribute meaningfully to the understanding of the Earth system. GLOBE recognizes that the creation of diverse, equitable, inclusive and accessible practices is central to achieving this goal and seeks to foster an environment that values diversity as a core strength; addresses inequities; and ensures inclusion of all perspectives in guiding the planning and implementation of The GLOBE Program.

Mission

The GLOBE DEIA working groups mission is to ensure that GLOBE learners and community members around the world are valued as diverse individuals with different perspectives and unique ways of thinking. This group commits to encouraging open collaboration and communication to build and sustain a diverse, just, equitable and inclusive program.

Working Group Guiding Principles

Diversity: The collective mixture of visible and invisible differences and similarities that enhance the societal relevance and impact of GLOBE and includes the full spectrum of personal attributes, cultural affiliations and socioeconomic (or professional) statuses that characterize individuals within society.

Equity: The fair treatment, access, opportunity and advancement for all people, with just inclusion in which all can participate, prosper, benefit, and reach their full potential. This means striving to identify and eliminate barriers that have prevented the full participation of some groups.

Inclusion: Ensuring respect and value of the individual identities and contributions of participants engaged in executing GLOBE’s vision, mission and strategic priorities and ensuring that GLOBE is a safe, welcoming, and supportive environment for all. This involves cultivating a culture of involvement, empowerment and promoting/sustaining a sense of belonging.

Accessibility: Strive to make GLOBE accessible for all participants. This involves continually improving GLOBE products and webpages and ensuring events and meetings are welcoming and accommodating for all participants.

New Scientific Publication
November 2023: Francis Emralino co-authors the article, "Percolation-Modeling Comparison Between the Conductivities of Zinc-Graphene Quantum Dot Nanocomposite and Graphite during Extracellular Electron Transfer in Microbial Fuel Cell Electrodes"

IVSS 2023 Awardee
22 April 2023: IVSS Award for Outstanding Efforts to Mentor and Support Students awarded to Rafat Ali Jambi.
NDEAM Presenter
31 October 2023: Rosalba presented as part of NASA’s Office of the Chief Information Officer's National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) Event Series. She shared best practices to create accessible and inclusive presentations with 126 NASA participants across the agency. Rosalba discussed the importance of accessibility, tips on creating accessible slides, practical advice on planning for inclusive interactions with an audience, and guidance to conduct presentations so that everyone has equitable access to information and a positive experience.  Rosalba also made available a comprehensive compilation of best practices to make presentations accessible. The compilation is based on online courses and materials, in-person workshops, and most importantly, interactions with NASA colleagues who have different disabilities and who have coached Rosalba throughout the past five years. Additionally, Rosalba made available a checklist that can be helpful to remember a variety of considerations to make presentations accessible and inclusive.
Hispanic Heritage Month Presenter
2 October 2 2023: NASA Langley's Jessica Taylor and Rosalba Giarratano provided a virtual presentation as part of Hunter College Campus Schools' celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month. They highlighted several Hispanic NASA role models and their contributions in diverse Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields. They also engaged students in a GLOBE Clouds cover estimation hands-on activity. Finally, they offered tips that can be helpful to gain knowledge and skills to work in STEM. There were 34 families of K-12 students in attendance.
Student Adviser
9 October 2023: NASA Langley's Rosalba Giarratano and Maria Royle connected virtually with 3 classes at Melvindale High School, in Michigan. The students' teacher, Ms. Victoria Vock, is part of the 2023-2024 Earth, NASA, GLOBE And Guided Explorations (ENGAGE) Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment (GLOBE) Mission Earth program's teacher cohort. ENGAGE teachers were trained in GLOBE protocols in the summer, and they continue meeting monthly with NASA Langley's Science Education team to learn more about how to incorporate NASA and GLOBE resources in their classrooms. Eighty-four Melvindale High School students participated in the virtual connections, sharing their green-down and clouds investigations, asking questions, and getting feedback about their scientific reports (Nature Notes). Rosalba and Maria emphasized that knowing different languages is an asset and answered many of the students’ questions in Spanish, which is the first language of many of these students.
