Benefit the Environment with GLOBE!

Benefiting the environment is part of the acronym that makes up GLOBE. Participants of this year’s Annual Meeting will have a chance to give back to the Detroit community through a volunteer opportunity with Bees in the D. There will be volunteer opportunities for everyone regardless of physical ability.

If you are interested in volunteering, please be sure to select YES to BE with GLOBE as an Agenda item during your registration. Transportation to/from the volunteer location will be provided. 

This activity is optional and not required. 

***Please note that students attending the student experience will be offsite this day and will not be able to participate in BE with GLOBE.***

Standard Nonsmoking room rate with group discount is $139 USD per night. Hotel room rates are subject to applicable surcharges, and state and local taxes in effect at the time of check in. Currently local taxes are 15%. This rate remains the same during the dates of our 2019 Annual Meeting for one to four people per room. Maximum occupancy per room is four people, depending on availability. Rates outside of the Annual Meeting dates may vary.

Your flight will take you to the Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW) as the nearest airport to the event.

Ride shares (such as Uber and Lyft), taxis, rental cars and public transportation are available from the airport. For more information please visit the DTW Public Transportation website.

The Crowne Plaza Detroit Downtown Riverfront is approximately a 20-minute drive from the airport.

Please note if you choose to rent a car, the hotel charges a daily parking fee. Please contact the Crowne Plaza directly for more information on parking rates.

Getting around once you’re here:

Transportation to/from field sites and the student experience will be arranged by GIO. 

Outside of the meeting if you’re looking to explore downtown: you can use Ride Shares (Uber, Lyft) or take the People Mover, which loops around downtown or the Q-Line which goes up and down Woodward Avenue (the main street in downtown Detroit).

We encourage all of our meeting members to consider their carbon footprint while making transportation arrangements and consider using public transportation when it is possible and safe to do so. 

The Crowne Plaza is located in the heart of downtown Detroit. A variety of shops and restaurants are located within walking distance. Check out: visitdetroit.com for tons of great information about the city. 

Please remember Detroit is a major city. As with any major metroplitan area there can be crime and some areas of the city are more safe than others. In recent years, crime in Detroit has been on the decline. However, it is important to stay vigilant and travel in groups, especially at night. Please be sure to research where you are going ahead of time.

Weather: Average July temperatures range from highs around 83⁰F (28⁰C) and lows around 66⁰F (19⁰C) with high humidity.

The students who select the Student Experience as part of their registration will stay at Howell Nature Center from 16-18 July. Howell Nature Center is an outdoor education and wildlife rehabilitation center located about an hour outside of Detroit. Students will be at Howell for two days and two nights (leaving for Howell on Tuesday morning, arriving back at the conference hotel on Thursday morning). There will be a variety of activities centered around learning about the local environment, including local animals, and opportunities to engage with other students to learn about each other's cultures. Students will also design and work on a project using GLOBE protocols to help them better understand their environment.

Be prepared to spend most of the day and evening outside and moving around. Athletic shoes, comfortable clothing, hats, sunglasses, sunscreen, and bug spray are recommended. Bring a swimsuit if you would like to swim in the lake. Please bring a reusable water bottle. You will be staying in dorm-like cabins for the two nights so plan accordingly. Bedding will be provided. All meals while at Howell will be provided. Space is limited. 

Howell Guides (adults supervising students during Student Experience) are selected by GIO with a maximum ratio of Guide to kid will be 1:8. All Howell Guides will be required to pass a background check. If you have any questions or concerns please contact meetings@globe.gov

All Students must be at least 10 years old or older. Due to space limitations, we are initially limiting student groups to a maximum of two students per school. This may change later, so please continue checking this site!

If you require an invitation letter to attend this meeting, please send your request to the Annual Meeting Planners and include full legal name, school name or GLOBE related title and country of citizenship.  Participants are responsible for obtaining their own travel documents and any required visas. For information about visa requirements and how to enter the US please click here.  

Registration fee for exhibitors is $550USD and includes one meeting registration plus one six-foot draped table and two chairs. Any additional registrations to the Annual Meeting will need to be registered under the “General Registration” category as a separate registration. WiFi and electricity will also be available.

Exhibitors may begin setting up on Sunday, 14 July and remain in place through tear down in the morning of Friday, 19 July. Exhibitor door prizes or other conference incentives may be given away at the closing networking event on Thursday, 18 July.

Cancellation for any reason will be refunded as follows:

On or before 15 May 2019 100% of the registration cost (less processing fees)

On or after 16 May 2019 50% of the registration cost (less processing fees).

On or after 1 July 2019 are NOT eligible for a refund.

For reporting unacceptable behavior, the on-duty points of contact for this conference will be provided at the meeting. 

Student Behavior Requirements: For the safety and well-being of all students participating in the GLOBE 23rd Annual Meeting in Detroit Michigan, USA there are specific guidelines and expectations for all the students in addition to the Participant Code of Conduct discussed above. 

• All students must obey applicable laws.
• All students are expected to be respectful of each other at all times and honor all directives and requests from sponsors, teachers, chaperones, Howell Guides, and GIO Staff.
• All students are expected to attend each program function and activities related to the GLOBE 23rd Annual Meeting in Detroit Michigan.
• There will be zero tolerance for alcohol consumption, smoking, or the use of any illegal drugs.
• There will be a curfew each night, random bed checks, and lock-down procedures in place at all times. Responsible Adult(s) and students are expected to be together in the cabins/hotel at this time.
