What are the impacts of extreme events, like Hurricane Harvey, on the water quality? This article from the Smithsonian magazine describes multiple ways in which public health officials are responding to several threats facing residents of Houston and surrounding locations. These threats include the impact of mold, the potential of an increase in vector-borne diseases such as Zika and West Nile virus, and the problems of contaminants left behind in the public water supply.  Have you experienced severe flooding in your region that resulted in problems with water quality?

One way to teach students about water quality and/or how scientists go about their work is to share articles with them. Here is a great article entitled "Study Maps Hidden Water Pollution in U.S. Coastal Areas". This research shows a great example of the use of both NASA satellite data and ground-based data. The UCAR Center for Science Education (UCAR SciEd) and BSCS are developing GLOBE Weather, an innovative, NGSS-based middle school science unit that combines activities, data analysis, and scientific protocols from the GLOBE Program. "There is an increasing chance (~55-60%) of La Niña during the Northern Hemisphere fall and winter 2017-18." says the NOAA Climate Prediction Center. "Over the last month, equatorial sea surface temperatures (SSTs) were near-to-below average across the central and eastern Pacific Ocean (Figure 1). ENSO-neutral conditions were apparent in the weekly fluctuation of Niño-3.4 SST index values between -0.1°C and -0.6°C (Figure 2).

Croatian GLOBE community has been organizing Science Fairs for the past 18 years, with the goal to encourage and promote students' research projects. Each year the judges select 30 - 40 school projects for the presentation at the GLOBE fair and for publishing on Croatian GLOBE website http://globe.pomsk.hr/smotra2017/zadar_17_projekti.htm . Observations of daily precipitation have been a part of GLOBE from the beginning. In the Sultanate Of Oman, two GOLBE schools from Al Buraimi Governorate collaborated to implement an environmental study. Both schools are in Al Buraimi state and the distance between them is small which helped the GLOBE students to design and implement their study collaboratively. From the start, the measurement of daily maximum and minimum air temperature within one hour of local solar noon has been a key GLOBE protocol. The low cost approach was to use a U-tube thermometer housed in a wooden instrument shelter facing away from the equator. The U-shaped tube contained mercury with pins on either side of the mercury. I recently had the pleasure of meeting a GLOBE student named Aspen. I was excited because my favorite type of tree is Aspen (Quaking Aspen to be more specific, Populus tremuloides to be even more specific), and I was able to tell her some of the fun facts about her namesake. My favorite thing about aspens is their bark. The white powder on it can act as sunscreen. It’s only about an SPF of 5 but it’s still pretty cool. The bark also contains chloroplasts which means it can photosynthesize, making it one of the few deciduous trees that do not solely rely on leaves for photosynthesis. They...

Congratulations to the GLOBE community - the GLOBE Observer app now has over 50,000 registered users!   That of course has an impact on the GLOBE system...We're getting ready for the eclipse right now - we have a few things to do to support everyone.  We're expecting on the order of 50-100 data measurements per second, which could result in 4 million cloud files during the eclipse and a TB of storage.  We'll be adding about 40 servers for just a few days to handle the load, and then ramp back down to our "normal" mode of operations.  We're running through lots of...

One of the things I do as a GLOBE partner is facilitate workshops for educators. When I facilitate a workshop for credit, I always require a short reflection. I use reflection because when teachers, like all of us, stop and think about what they learned the learning is deeper and more relevant. And, candidly, they are more likely to implement GLOBE into their classrooms.
