As you know, we are all in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. Greetings, On April 22, 2020, the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, and the 25th anniversary of GLOBE and me as a GLOBE Teacher, I introduced the GLOBE Satellites and Education Team (G-SET). Una de las investigaciones ganadoras a nivel institucional fue la realizada por un grupo de estudiantes del 3° de secundaria. Ellas compararon el tiempo atmosférico de Lince, distrito donde se ubica la institución educativa, con Bellavista, Callao, distrito donde vive una de las estudiantes.                    Las conclusiones a las que llegaron luego de su indagación fueron:  a.- La temperatura en Lince es variable; mientras que, en Bellavista baja demasiado por estar cerca al mar. b.- La humedad en Bellavista se...

Al año siguiente, 2019, los estudiantes realizaron el estudio del tiempo en la localidad y para ello se utilizó la caseta meteorológica instalada en nuestra Institución Educativa. En este caso, cada sección registró los datos de temperatura y humedad con el termómetro  de alcohol y el termohigrómetro. Nuestro proyecto "Conociendo hábitats y larvas de mosquitos" fue presentado en la Feria de Ciencias que cada año se realiza a nivel nacional. Nuestros estudiantes participaron en la etapa a nivel de RED.

Los resultados obtenidos fueron presentados a través de un proyecto en la Feria Virtual Internacional GO Mosquito en donde nuestra Institución Educativa quedó en 3er  lugar a nivel nacional.                         Con ayuda de los premios recibidos se pudo concretar un segundo desafío de contribuir con información científica de nuevos hallazgos de criaderos potenciales de mosquitos. Algunas de las muestras observadas con el microscopio para celular no tenían características de larvas, mas bien parecían moscas. Los estudiantes determinaron esto pues no cumplían con las partes de una larva. Sin embargo, en una muestra de la pecera si observamos larvas de género  culex , fácilmente reconocido por el sifón y por su posición bajo el agua. I've had a great time teaching folks how to use the GLOBE Observer App this past month through weekly Webinars put on by the NASA IV&V ERC. Folks have seemed to really enjoy the trainings and feel more confident with identifying cloud types using the updated Clouds portal on the GLOBE Observer App! I look to continue doing these online webinars in the future!

Luego de 15 días, recogimos las ovitrampas para ver qué encontrabamos. En algunas ovitrampas no había nada y surgió la hipótesis de que como se había fumigado el colegio en los meses anteriores, era probable que no haya ningún zancudo. Pero donde sí encontramos muestras de larvas fue en la pecera de nuestro amigo estudiante. Así que rápidamente lo llevamos al laboratorio y junto con todo el aula la docente orientó sobre los pasos para su identificación.                                    ...

Luego de elaborar las ovitrampas, los estudiantes las ubicaron en diferentes lugares del colegio: jardines, patio, baños, laboratorio y cerca de una gruta.        Pero uno de los estudiantes, observó que en la pecera de su casa habían algunas larvas parecidas a las que vió en el video en clase. La Sra. Tina Rogerson es la programadora científica y analista para el equipo NASA GLOBE nubes en el Centro de Investigaciones Langley de la NASA en Hampton, Virginia con la compañía SSAI. La sesiones de aprendizaje que se aplicaron a 2°, 3° y 4° de secundaria se relacionaron con la elaboración de ovitrampas para colocarlos en los posibles criaderos potenciales de mosquitos, de los domicilios y del colegio. Luego de la capacitación sobre el uso de GLOBE Observer se realizaron sesiones de aprendizaje con los estudiantes para incluir actividades en la programación anual. En las sesiones se presentó información sobre las enfermedades causadas por picaduras de mosquitos, ciclo vital y la forma en que podrían contribuir a  disminuir la proliferación de estos insectos.    Algunas cosas que manifestaban los estudiantes era que habían observado muchos zancudos, tanto en el colegio como en sus domicilios, por lo que se interesaron en conocer más sobre ellos y cómo eliminarlos.
