One of the things I do as a GLOBE partner is facilitate workshops for educators. When I facilitate a workshop for credit, I always require a short reflection. I use reflection because when teachers, like all of us, stop and think about what they learned the learning is deeper and more relevant. And, candidly, they are more likely to implement GLOBE into their classrooms. To give participants direction in their reflecting, I use the 4 R model of reflection: review, relate, remark, revise. - Review. We are working on a new visualization system.  The new system keeps many of the capabilities of the old "vis" system, but works much better on phones and tablets.  We've tried to streamline and modernize things as well. Nowadays a very important aspect in education is to work in collaboration with other schools and students. It is important to do good planning and set dates for different collaboration activities. The GLOBE Program provides the opportunity to connect students from all over the world and to work collaboratively with another school. In several schools this methodology of teaching and communication is being carried out. In my previous blog post, I showed the results of my surface temperature experiment. It was a great way to highlight some of the practical ways to use science, and it was yet another way for me to talk about my puppy. My experiment and accompanying blog was straightforward enough. These are the results from my surface temperature experiment that I discussed in my previous blog post (same title, part 1). Results and Conclusion : Figure 2: Graph of average surface temperatures of the three surfaces over three days including air temperature data lines. In case you missed it, last month, was all about the 2017 International Virtual Science Symposium . There were over 140 entries from all 6 GLOBE regions. Students submitted reports about their research on all of the “spheres” (hydrosphere, atmosphere, biosphere, pedosphere, and earth as a system) and they were reviewed by a panel of scientists, teachers, and science enthusiasts to be rewarded with stars and badges. Ten outstanding interns are working with me this summer to provide nature time for K-2nd graders at four camps in our city. Each team spends an hour each day at one of the camps in groups ranging in number from 10 to 20 for an hour outside while sitting on a tarp under a tree or pavilion. The interns first read a GLOBE Storybook or other book on nature to the children, do an activity or take a nature walk, and then show them a poster of a real African American scientist or leader who studies the topic of the day. First week with the K-2nd graders at the Osceola McCarty Youth Development Center and the Hattiesburg Parks & Rec summer camps went great! The interns are doing an outstanding job reading GLOBE Elementary Storybooks and others about nature, sharing the stories of African American scientists, and conducting activities - all while sitting outside (ideally under the trees!). As Earth science has a single uncontrolled object of study, the first rule is to take today’s data today. In the fall of 2016, the students in my Weather and Climate class, GEPL 4490/5490, at the University of Toledo developed projects based on El Nino. The students in class were give the task to look at GLOBE data from a part of the world in which El Nino has an effect. Scientists rely on research, statistical models, and climate forecast models to help them determine upcoming natural events. Consider the rain gauge used in GLOBE, CoCoRaHS, and other citizen science programs. Just four pieces plus 2 mounting screws – an inner graduated cylinder, an outer cylinder, a cap/funnel, and a mounting bracket. The area of the outer tube is exactly 10 times the areas of the inner tube and the cap/funnel, so the graduations on the inner cylinder can be spaced ten times further apart. Thus, 0.2 mm of rain fills the inner tube to a depth of 2.0 mm, which one can read. Hello GLOBE friends! The Evaluation Working Group has recently shared with you the results of the 2015 survey that was sent to the GLOBE teachers. Stipend Information The site set up stipend has been extended a month! If you are a GLOBE trained teacher in South Dakota, set up a site in in the GLOBE database in preparation for data collection in April to receive a $50 stipend.  The site set up can be for any protocol, even one you are currently doing. While we wait for SAGE to get turned on, here are high school activities on SAGE to bring out the STEM. After launch on Saturday was aborted, we are excited to share that SAGE did successfully launch to the space station on board a Falcon 9 Rocket on February 19.  You can watch a video of the launch here . Currently, we are in an ENSO-neutral period called "La Nada." La Nada is the midpoint between an El Niño and La Niña. This occurs when the ocean temperatures in the Pacific Ocean are near average. The "in-between" ocean state can be frustrating for long-range forecasters. "It's like driving without a decent road map — it makes forecasting difficult," said climatologist Bill Patzert of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Hi All, The Urban Heat Island/Surface Temperature Research Campaign was very successful this year. There were a total of 1306 surface temperature observations from 59 schools during the Urban Heat Island/Surface Temperature Research Campaign. While in Thailand, last month Peter and I met one of Kris and Mullica’s graduate students, who is involved with the regular collection of GLOBE weather data and is learning about the ENSO cycle. He and I chatted a lot about what he is doing, and he took us to see one of the automated weather stations that is situated in a mountain village about 30 minutes out of Nakhom Si Thammarat.  We had gotten to this southern part of Thailand about a week after some very serious flooding had killed 38 people, devastated many homes and villages, and had even shut the airport down- which had...

It was great to see the GLOBE presence at the AMS Annual Meeting in Seattle last week. Monday, the Symposium on Education is focused on K12 initiatives. The morning sessions all focused on GLOBE related activities and projects that included the NASA Mission Earth Project, GOES-R/16, the new Elementary GLOBE Climate book, and the International Virtual Science Fair. The new GLOBE Cloud app was presented in the afternoon. There were several projects presented in the Education Poster session as well. Student Research Symposia The South Dakota Discovery Center is pleased to announce the Northwest Region Student Research Symposium will be held at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology June 1-2. Teams of up to three middle or high school students are invited to present a GLOBE based research project (or question investigation if research project is too intimidating).
