TEST REF 122

GLOBE is excited to host the 2023 GLOBE International Virtual Science Symposium (IVSS)! The IVSS is a way for primary through undergraduate students from all GLOBE countries to showcase their research and hard work. With GLOBE, students learn the practices of science through hands-on investigations in their own communities, which sparks their curiosity and interest in science. This often leads to inquiries that help solve real-world problems and further understanding of the global environment. It is time for students to show the world what they have learned!

IVSS 2023

The theme for this year's IVSS is Global Connections: Investigating Earth as a System Together. Students are encouraged to explore the Earth as a System Protocol Bundles and use them as tools to investigate their environmental research questions. This year’s theme also has similarities to NASA's Year of Open Science, and it inspires students to make connections with other students and scientific explorations around the world. Students are also advised to present their research in creative ways through, for example, storytelling tools such as video, online media, storyboards, drawings and more.

Making Global Connections

With this year’s theme, there is potential for collaboration like never before among IVSS students. Participants are advised to seek new and innovative ways to show how science connects everyone and the value shared data can add to research. These direct connections to partnership and community research also makes the "I am a Collaborator" badge especially important this year.

Find a Collaborator
The GLOBE website is a great resource for finding potential research partners. To search for other collaborators, use GLOBE's Find a Project Collaborator tool to identify teachers and other research partners from around the world. Utilizing personal networks within a participant's region is another great way to find partners.

As an example of the benefits collaboration can create in research, review the project below to learn more about how innovative collaboration techniques led to the scientific success of these GLOBE community members' final report:

Using the Earth as a System Protocol Bundles

When forming research questions, students should reference the Earth as a System Protocol Bundles. These curated protocol collections cover: agriculture, air quality, El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO), mosquitos, oceans, rivers and lakes, soils, urban environments, the water cycle, water quality and weather. Each of these topics comes with an introduction to the bundle explaining how the the included protocols relate to one another. Additionally, these bundles contain case studies, example research questions and other resources to help the GLOBE community understand the details of each protocol.

Tip: It may be helpful to explore more than one bundle to compare their similarities and differences.
