April 2018 Community Letter

Letter to the Community

20 April 2018

Greetings and Happy Earth Day Everyone!

Earth Day is a special day for The GLOBE Program because GLOBE began operations on that day, in 1995. This year, on 22 April, we celebrate not only Earth Day but also the 23rd Anniversary of The GLOBE Program.

Recently, we put out a call to students to send us a short video to explain why they would like to be a student keynote speaker at the GLOBE Learning Expedition in Ireland, in July. Thanks to all students who sent videos. I want to share a few of them with you for Earth Day. They capture, better than words, the spirit of our GLOBE student community.

We have invited these students to speak in Ireland. What a great world of students GLOBE has become!

All over the world, Earth Day is marked by leaders, citizens, organizations, and agencies coming together to celebrate planet Earth. Earth Day is now a global event, in which more than 1 billion people in 192 countries take part. Earth Day is a global outpouring of energy, enthusiasm, and commitment to creating a new environmental paradigm for how to protect our world. It is a wonderful day that represents unparalleled global collaboration.

By celebrating your involvement with The GLOBE Program on Earth Day, you understand the heart of this program, which is to encourage the next generation of scientists and stewards of the Earth. Some of you are, or may become, scientists; but all of you can be stewards who care for, and protect, our planet.

I hope you all get outside on Sunday to celebrate the fact that you are alive in this wonderful world.

We look forward to knowing what you'll be doing to celebrate Earth Day. Include the hashtag #EarthDayGLOBE2018 on your social posts and share your activities with us.

Happy Earth Day and Happy Anniversary GLOBE!

Have a great Earth Day weekend!

Sincerely,

Tony Murphy signature
