GLOBE Announces 2016 Distinguished Educator Fellows
The GLOBE Implementation Office is pleased to announce the 2016 GLOBE Distinguished Educator Fellows. The fellows will create new GLOBE learning activities for use by the GLOBE community. The 2016 fellows are Mr. Gary Popiolkowski (USA) and Mr. Dan Orobi (Kenya).
Gary Popiolkowski is a middle school science teacher at Chartiers-Houston Jr./Sr. High School in Houston, Pennsylvania, USA. He has taught science for 42 years and became a GLOBE teacher when the program began in 1995. Mr. Popiolkowski, a recipient of the Carnegie Science Center Middle Level Educator Award for Excellence, is a certified Problem Based Learner Trainer and Instructor. He has presented multiple times at the National Science Teachers Association regional and national conferences on Problem Based Learning. Mr. Popiolkowski will be developing a learning activity about land cover, and will be using the Modified UNESCO Classification for site definition.
Dan Orobi is a geography and math teacher at Homa Bay Boys High School in Homa Bay, Kenya. He received his education degree from Moi University in Kenya. Mr. Orobi is a GLOBE trained teacher and loves taking his students outside the classroom to truly experience our natural environment. He is actively involved in the GLOBE Africa Lake Victoria Project and has been working with his students doing hydrology protocols. Mr. Orobi plans to develop a learning activity about hydrology protocols, including the newly developed Mosquito Protocol.
