GLOBE Teachers: New Educational GPM Anime Comic Booklet Now Available
NASA’s Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) mission is proud to present a new educational comic, “Raindrop Tales: GPM Meets Mizu-Chan.”
In the Spring of 2013, the GPM mission hosted the GPM Anime Challenge, which was a contest for artists around the world to develop an anime-themed comic book character to teach students about the mission. The Japanese anime/manga style of art was chosen because the mission is a collaboration between NASA and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA).
For the challenge, two grand prize winners were selected:
- “GPM,” by Yuki Kiriga
- “Mizu-Chan,” by Sabrynne Bucholz.
GPM is an international satellite mission, launched in February 2014, that is providing next-generation observations of rain and snow worldwide every three hours from space. The data provided will be used to unify precipitation measurements made by an international network of partner satellites to quantify when, where, and how much it rains or snows around the world. The GPM mission is helping advance our understanding of Earth's water and energy cycles, improve the forecasting of extreme events that cause natural disasters, and extend current capabilities of using satellite precipitation information to directly benefit society.
