GLOBE Xpedition - Returning to the Roof of Africa
From 22 September to 1 October 2011, GLOBE students are invited to become virtual, online participants in the third Xpedition to Mt. Kilimanjaro. For the third time, a GLOBE Africa research expedition comprised of GLOBE students, alumni and scientists will scale the largest mountain on the African continent. Their purpose is to conduct experiments, document the shifting biomes and shrinking glaciers, and share this remarkable experience online with those who want to travel and learn along with them!

Two new features of the Xpedition website this year include a new data visualization display and a LIVE Webinar from the mountain! The advanced visualization will feature displays of collected data as well as 3D Google Earth Tours of the mountain. The LIVE Webinar on 28 September 2011: 18:00-18:30 GMT (2:00 PM EDT-US), hosted by the Arctic Research Consortium of the United States through their Polar TREC program, will allow GLOBE teachers and students to pose questions to the Xpedition members about their research, and about the experience of climbing the tallest free standing mountain on earth. In turn, the Xpedition members will want to know about the biomes of those participating online, in order to compare your biome descriptions with those on the mountain. And you will be encouraged to contribute scientific measurements and to share observations of your own communities, online.
Join fellow GLOBE students and educators as they share eyewitness accounts of the shifting biomes and shrinking glaciers of Mt. Kilimanjaro, the unique ecology and culture of the region. Learn about research done on previous Xpeditions and hear team members describe the changes they are seeing. Alongside an actual scientific expedition team, come to know and understand the implications of global climate change in a fundamentally different way than available through classroom study alone.
