The GLOBE Program Celebrates 20 Years!
Earth Day 2015 marked the 20th Anniversary of The GLOBE Program - but it marks just the beginning of a year-long celebration that pays tribute to GLOBE's worldwide community of students, alumni, teachers, scientists, sponsors, and supporters.
We want to thank everyone who is participating in, and contributing to, this wonderful global effort; and we want to thank our sponsors for creating this video tribute marking this very special year.

Data Entry Challenge: Making the Data Count!
In celebration of Earth Day 2015, and GLOBE's 20th Anniversary, more than 240 schools answered the call to not just count the data, but to make the data count. More than 160,000 measurements were added to the GLOBE database during the Data Entry Challenge that took place over Earth Week (20-24 April).
GIO salutes the students (and their schools) who contributed the greatest number of measurements in their region per GLOBE investigation area or Earth "sphere." These schools will also be recognized at GLOBE's Annual Partner Meeting in Los Angeles, CA, USA (20-24 July) on the "Hollywood Walk of Fame." GIO would also like to once again acknowledge, and thank, the students (and schools) who contributed the most data over the past 20 years - and to those who have contributed any data to the global database. Thanks for digging in and making your data count during this special event!
Community Celebrations Marking GLOBE's 20th Anniversary Year
Earth Day may have come and gone - but the number of events marking The GLOBE Program's 20th Anniversary continues to grow! Discover what your country will be doing to mark the occasion.
Have You Registered for The Annual Partner Meeting in Los Angeles?
This year, GLOBE's Annual Partner Meeting will be held in Los Angeles, 20-24 July. (Working Groups in Science, Education, Evaluation, and Technology will meet on 19 July.) The theme of this year's meeting is "Strengths of a GLOBE-al Community of Scientists." Keep checking in to make sure you're up-to-date on all the happenings!
2015 GLOBE Africa Xpedition
The 2015 GLOBE Program trek to the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro (Tanzania) will take place 23 September through 02 October. Nearly every year since 2009, an international team of GLOBE scientists, teachers, and students have embarked on this scientific adventure to evaluate the evolving ecosystem of the largest free-standing mountain in the world.
We invite teachers, students, and scientists from each region to join in on this Xpedition to study the various ecological zones and record vegetation, air, soil and surface temperature, cloud type and cover, relative humidity, and several hydrological measurements. We also invite you to follow along via webinar, take a guided online tour, and even interact with Xpedition members. What can this mountain teach us about the local, as well as global, environment?
Opportunities for Students
NASA's Cube Quest Challenge
The Cube Quest competition is on! NASA's Space Technology Mission Directorate Centennial Challenge Program is offering a total of $5 million to teams that develop, build, and deliver flight-qualified, small satellites capable of advanced operations near and beyond the moon.
Cube Quest teams will be able to compete for a secondary payload spot on the first mission of NASA's Orion spacecraft, which is set to launch atop the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket. Are you - and your team - ready for the challenge?
NASA's One-Stop Shopping for Students
Eligible students can now access a portfolio of NASA internship, fellowship, and scholarship opportunities through a single portal and a single application. The 2015 Fall Session Internship Application is from 3 March through 31 May!
Opportunities for Teachers
YLACES Implementation Grants
To support summer activities and/or preparations for next fall, YLACES (Youth Learning as Citizen Environmental Scientists) is soliciting one-page applications for implementation grants of up to $1,000. These grants are intended to help facilitate the engagement of youth in doing environmental science. Solicitations will be accepted through 30 June; however, they will be acted upon as soon as they are received.
Free NASA STEM Educator Webinars
The NASA STEM Educator Professional Development Collaborative (EPDC) is presenting a series of no-cost webinars open to all educators. All pre-service, K-12, and informal educators, as well as university faculty, are invited to join NASA education specialists to learn about NASA missions, activities, lesson plans, educator guides, and online resources that integrate NASA and STEM into the classroom.
An upcoming webinar, "Space Math Series-Active Math" is geared toward educators in grade levels 5 through 8. This webinar is presented by John Weis, and will be held from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. ET on 13 May.
2015 NSTA Summer Institute -- Implementing NGSS
The National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) is offering two summer institutes to help educators implement the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). This conference is designed to help educators and school leaders understand the changes occurring with NGSS, including how to apply NGSS in the classroom (differentiated for two grade bands: elementary and secondary).
The schedule for the "Implementing Next Generation Science Standards" conferences is:
- 9 July - Anaheim, California, USA; Sheraton Park Hotel at the Anaheim Resort
- 28 July - Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA; Sheraton Atlantic City Convention Center

Upcoming GISN Webinar -- "How to do Outreach"
The GLOBE International Scientist Network (GISN) is an international network of scientists who work with GLOBE students around the world. There are many exciting and unique ways to participate in this scientific and educational endeavor.
The GISN also hosts webinars that provide tools and tips for scientists interacting with students and teachers. On 28 May, GISN will be hosting the webinar, "How to do Outreach." For this webinar, GLOBE's Dr. Julie Malmberg will present sample outreach activities for classroom engagement in K-12 and undergraduate settings, including SciGirls and GLOBE materials.

The GLOBE Data Entry App is now available! If you have an existing GLOBE account, the Data Entry App allows you to enter protocol data directly from your iOS or Android device. The app also allows you to use your phone's camera to document your sites and measurements. Put science -- and adventures in learning -- in the palm of your hands!
Europe Aerosols Campaign - Tell Us Your Story!
Did you participate in the Europe Aerosol Campaign's spring intensive observation period (02 March through 08 May)? Tell us your scientific discovery stories involving aerosols - tiny particles in our atmosphere that have a huge impact on our environment.
