Register Now for Tuesday’s (03 May) GLOBE El Niño Field Campaign Webinar: “Biometry and Ground Cover”

El Nino GLOBE Field Campaign

There’s still time to register for the 03 May GLOBE El Niño Field Campaign Webinar: “Biometry and Ground Cover.” This webinar will begin at 8:00 p.m. EDT (12 a.m. 04 May UTC).

In this hour-long webinar, a NASA scientist who works with biometric and ground cover data will explain how and why this data is collected using NASA satellites. A GLOBE teacher who is currently using this protocol with students will do a review of the Biometry Tree and Ground Cover protocols and offer best practices for implementation in classroom settings. Guest speakers include: Dr. Eric Brown de Colstoun (a Physical Scientist in the Biospheric Science Branch at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, Maryland, USA); Dr. Mike Jabot (professor of science education at the State University of New York at Fredonia); and Marina Pavlic (who works at a multidisciplinary secondary school located in the county of Primorje-Gorski Kotar in western Croatia).

If you are participating in this campaign, please remember to do your El Niño member data counts for March-April 2016 (use the GLOBE Advanced Data Access Tool) and submit them HERE (within the tab labeled “Data Counts - March–April”) by the end of the day on Monday, 09 May 2016. (You can search by teacher and by protocol to get your data counts.)

As part of the GLOBE El Niño Field Campaign, which began on Tuesday, 01 March 2016, there will be a suite of six GLOBE measurement protocols (including the SMAP protocol) that will serve as ways to identify environmental changes affected by El Niño. There will also be regular webinars to discuss the mechanics of the campaign, give updates on data collection, and explore science with experts. Register for all of the webinars here!

Throughout the campaign, updates about data collection and analysis, as well as guest blogs from scientists about how they study El Niño and teachers doing data collection with their students will be posted. Keep checking back here!
