The GLOBE Urban Heat Island Effect (UHIE)-Surface Temperature Intensive Observation Period (IOP) Begins 01 October
The October Urban Heat Island Effect (UHIE)-Surface Temperature Intensive Observation Period (IOP) will begin on 01 October, and will take place throughout the month.
The UHIE-Surface Temperature IOP takes place in October, December, and March. IOPs involve GLOBE students, scientists, educators, and researchers collecting and entering targeted data into the GLOBE database during specific periods of time.
The IOP will focus on looking at the impact urbanization has on the Earth’s surface temperature, and will help students take surface temperature, air temperature, and cloud observation, and engage in research projects. As always, it is vital to have GLOBE schools participate in this IOP – and engage in the hands-on scientific exploration of the impacts UHIE can have on the environment.
Research Projects Submitted to the GLOBE International Virtual Science Symposium
Over the years, numerous GLOBE students have developed research projects based on experiences with the UHIE. A few submitted to the 2022 IVSS include:
- Are there any differences between surface temperature readings across the Maltese Islands
- Assessing the Effects of Surface Temperature and Tree Coverage in Select Suburban Parks
- How does surface temperature compare between the school prairie and the farmfield?
Students are invited to participate in the October IOP – and develop new projects that explore the impacts of UHIE on the environment.
