What is the quality of water in our environment? The next Phase III GLOBE ENSO (El Niño Southern Oscillation) Student Research Campaign science and research webinar will seek to answer this question – and other guiding water quality questions. The webinar, “Water Quality,” will be TODAY (24 October) at 5 p.m. ET (11 p.m. UTC). Join in and contribute to this vital discussion!

The first half of the webinar will be a presentation from a NASA scientist, Dr. John Bolten (the Associate Program Manager of Water Resources for the NASA Applied Sciences Program). Dr. Bolten will share the many ways in which NASA missions are able to study Earth’s water. The second half of the webinar will focus on collaboration.

During the webinar, a NASA Wavelength list of resources for teachers will be shared; GLOBE teachers/students in the U.S. will share some “Best Practices” when using hydrology protocols (and will also describe what they’ve learned about water quality in their region); and participants will discuss ideas for potential collaborations related to water quality. (This webinar will be recorded, and you will be able to access it at your convenience. The next webinar, on 14 November, will take place during a time that is convenient for those in Europe.)

The guiding questions for the webinar are:

  • SME: “What is the quality of water in our environment?” (A NASA scientist will give an overview of the use of remote sensing to measure water quality.)
  • Collaboration: We will focus our discussion on these questions:

1. What are some "Best Practices" when using hydrology protocols?

2. How can teachers/scientists use their results to bring about change in their communities?

3.  What are some potential collaborations GLOBE schools could engage in while focusing on water quality?

4. What resources/support can we offer to enhance their collaboration?
