Call to the Community: Join one of five GLOBE Working Groups (WGs) on Science, Education, Evaluation, Technology and Communication

Join a Working Group

Five Working Groups are being formed to enhance the role of GLOBE U.S. and Country Partners/ Coordinators and GLOBE Scientists and Educators in shaping the future of the GLOBE Program and supporting the development and implementation of GLOBE worldwide.

We are calling on you to participate in the nomination process for representatives of the Working Groups. You can nominate yourself or anyone in the GLOBE Community. Nominations are due 24 May 2014. Read more here.

 

Near East and North Africa (NENA) Regional Meeting

Near East and North Africa (NENA) Regional Meeting

Representatives from Bahrain, Lebanon, Jordan, Mauritania, Oman, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates met in Bahrain from 26-30 April for the annual Near East and North Africa (NENA) Regional Meeting. In the photo on the left, students of Bahrain's Abd Al-Aziz bin Mohammed Al-Khalifa School explain their research on the effect of water quality on biodiversity in the region of southeast Tubli Bay, to GLOBE Director Dr. Tony Murphy at the Tenth Annual GLOBE Science Fair in Bahrain, held in conjunction with the NENA meeting.

SciGirls = Girls in Science!

SciGirls, primarily funded by the National Science Foundation, has developed a series of public television programs highlighting the processes of science and engineering and offers girls a glimpse of exciting science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) career possibilities.

Dr. Julie Malmberg, GLOBE Program Office (GPO) Science and Education team member, will be attending a SciGirls Train-the-Trainer workshop in Twin Cities, Minnesota, USA, from 13-15 May. She will be sharing resources and activities with the GLOBE Community. GLOBE / NASA Satellite Partnerships - Don't Miss the Opportunity to Become Part of a NASA Mission

Along with the ongoing CloudSat and CALIPSO missions, the GLOBE Program is involving educators and students in activities related to two new NASA satellite missions in 2014:

  • Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM), which was launched on 28 February
  • Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP), scheduled for launch in November



Precipitation Measurement Missions

 

During a major rehearsal of the SMAP calibration and validation system during May and June 2014, the SMAP science team encourages GLOBE schools to collect soil moisture measurements that could be compared to the simulated SMAP observations.

Budburst!

The GLOBE Program Office (GPO) science and education team has been tracking green-up of a box elder tree (Acer negundo) just outside the office in Boulder, Colorado. The tree experienced budburst on Earth Day! Follow green-up on Twitter as we document the green-up cycle of this tree.
