Students in Virginia (USA) Participate in 21st Century Community Learning Centers Afterschool Program Using GLOBE Protocols

Students at Hines Middle School in Newport News, Virginia, USA, are expanding their time at school – and their horizons – through the use of GLOBE protocols, all while participating in an innovative afterschool program funded by 21st Century Community Learning Centers (21CCLC).

The 21CCLC initiative provides funds for afterschool programs across the United States. These programs, which operate before and after school (as well as during holidays, weekends, and the summer), offer students (especially those who attend high-poverty and low-performing schools) academic-enrichment opportunities and other activities that support school-day learning and positive development. The program helps students meet state and local student standards in core academic subjects, such as reading and math; offers students a broad array of enrichment activities that can complement their regular academic programs; and offers literacy and other educational services to the families of participating children.

Several students at Hines Middle School are participating in the program, and are using GLOBE protocols. According to a video produced by the Newport News Public School District, these students are “venturing outside to collect cloud and surface temperature data using their own senses, mobile apps, and scientific equipment. They are recording their findings in their own science research journals – helping NASA Earth observers collect ground-based observations in relation to how clouds impact Earth’s energy systems.” The video explains that the students are also conducing lab investigations in their classroom to better understand Earth’s function as a global system. “By working alongside NASA scientists and engineers, 21st century students in the Newport News Public Schools system are able to develop their own leadership and collaboration skills to complete rigorous and thought-provoking tasks. And, with minimal teacher assistance, the students are examining the world and the galaxy around us with cutting-edge technology and innovating thinking.”
