The American Geosciences Institute (AGI) is sponsoring a photography contest, “Inspired by Earth,” to celebrate Earth Science Week 2018 (14-20 October). Each year, AGI organizes this national and international event to help the public gain a better understanding and appreciation for the Earth sciences and to encourage stewardship of the Earth. This year, Earth Science Week (ESW) will celebrate the theme "Earth as Inspiration."

The ESW photography contest is open to interested persons of any age. You must be a resident of the United States or an international member of an AGI Member Society or an AGI International Associate Society to enter.

Entries must be composed of original, authentic, unpublished material and must be the sole property of the entrant, not previously submitted to any other contest. Published material includes that which has been posted on the World Wide Web. This includes, but is not limited to, Facebook, or any other social network Website where photos have been posted and shared.

The photograph should focus on the topic, “Inspired by Earth.” Humans, individually and in groups, use the planet’s natural systems for creative expression in many ways. These natural systems include the geosphere (land), hydrosphere (water), atmosphere (air), and biosphere (living things). With a camera, you can capture evidence of ways people are inspired by Earth in their art, be it through dance, sculpture, or some other art form. In a photo, show how Earth serves as inspiration for your art where you are. Or simply snap a photo that shows a view of the natural world that you find inspiring, wherever you happen to be!
