GLOBE Stars in New York
From the stately halls of the United Nations Building in downtown New York City to the backwoods of rural New York State, GLOBE Teachers Patsy Cicala and Wayne Gilchrest are working with hundreds of students to expand global and local knowledge about the Earth's environment.
On April 22, 1999, GLOBE students Senayet Agonafer, Sidney Hill and Leah Owens from Poughkeepie High School in New York presented the GLOBE Land Cover/Biology protocols to youth delegates from approximately 50 countries at the United Nation's Seventh Session of the Commission on Sustainable Development. The Poughkeepsie High students were assisted by Steven Cicala of Saint Paul's School in Concord, New Hampshire and Tracey Toufali and Sara Fitzgerald of the Dutchess Environmental Academy in Staatsburg, New York.
Two days later, Mr. Cicala and Mr. Gilchrest led students, parents, and teachers representing eleven educational institutions from all over the Hudson Valley in the second regional MUC-a-Thon. Using hand held satellite receivers, laptop computers, and topographical maps, thirteen teams scoured a six-county region, locating and identifying specific land cover and land use areas.
Schools from Pawling to New Paltz, from Millbrook to Wappingers Falls, covered an area of 545 square miles. They snapped over 240 pictures and entered over 640 data points to the GLOBE Student Data Archive. Scientists at the University of New Hampshire will be using the photographs and data to help improve their interpretations of satellite imagery.
