Observations of daily precipitation have been a part of GLOBE from the beginning. At the start, GLOBE’s participation model was that schools would take measurement following all of the original 17 protocols. In the Sultanate Of Oman, two GOLBE schools from Al Buraimi Governorate collaborated to implement an environmental study. Both schools are in Al Buraimi state and the distance between them is small which helped the GLOBE students to design and implement their study collaboratively. One of the two schools is a female school (Hafsa bint Sirin School) while the other is a male (Al Khawarizmi School). From the start, the measurement of daily maximum and minimum air temperature within one hour of local solar noon has been a key GLOBE protocol. The low cost approach was to use a U-tube thermometer housed in a wooden instrument shelter facing away from the equator. The U-shaped tube contained mercury with pins on either side of the mercury. Quaking aspens can grow in a wide range of environmental conditions. I recently had the pleasure of meeting a GLOBE student named Aspen. I was excited because my favorite type of tree is Aspen (Quaking Aspen to be more specific, Populus tremuloides to be even more specific), and I was able to tell her some of the fun facts about her namesake. My favorite thing about aspens is their bark. The white powder on it can act as sunscreen. It’s only about an SPF of 5 but it’s still pretty cool. The bark also contains chloroplasts which means it can photosynthesize, making it one of the few deciduous trees that do not solely rely on leaves for photosynthesis. They...

Congratulations to the GLOBE community - the GLOBE Observer app now has over 50,000 registered users!   That of course has an impact on the GLOBE system...We're getting ready for the eclipse right now - we have a few things to do to support everyone.  We're expecting on the order of 50-100 data measurements per second, which could result in 4 million cloud files during the eclipse and a TB of storage.  We'll be adding about 40 servers for just a few days to handle the load, and then ramp back down to our "normal" mode of operations.  We're running through lots of...

One of the things I do as a GLOBE partner is facilitate workshops for educators. When I facilitate a workshop for credit, I always require a short reflection. I use reflection because when teachers, like all of us, stop and think about what they learned the learning is deeper and more relevant. And, candidly, they are more likely to implement GLOBE into their classrooms. In my previous blog post, I showed the results of my surface temperature experiment. It was a great way to highlight some of the practical ways to use science, and it was yet another way for me to talk about my puppy. My experiment and accompanying blog was straightforward enough. These are the results from my surface temperature experiment that I discussed in my previous blog post (same title, part 1). Results and Conclusion: Figure 2: Graph of average surface temperatures of the three surfaces over three days including air temperature data lines. My results show that my hypothesis was half right (remember, it’s ok if your data results do not match your hypothesis!). In case you missed it, last month, was all about the 2017 International Virtual Science Symposium. There were over 140 entries from all 6 GLOBE regions. Students submitted reports about their research on all of the “spheres” (hydrosphere, atmosphere, biosphere, pedosphere, and earth as a system) and they were reviewed by a panel of scientists, teachers, and science enthusiasts to be rewarded with stars and badges. Ten outstanding interns are working with me this summer to provide nature time for K-2nd graders at four camps in our city. Each team spends an hour each day at one of the camps in groups ranging in number from 10 to 20 for an hour outside while sitting on a tarp under a tree or pavilion. The interns first read a GLOBE Storybook or other book on nature to the children, do an activity or take a nature walk, and then show them a poster of a real African American scientist or leader who studies the topic of the day. First week with the K-2nd graders at the Osceola McCarty Youth Development Center and the Hattiesburg Parks & Rec summer camps went great! The interns are doing an outstanding job reading GLOBE Elementary Storybooks and others about nature, sharing the stories of African American scientists, and conducting activities - all while sitting outside (ideally under the trees!). As Earth science has a single uncontrolled object of study, the first rule is to take today’s data today.
