  The Chang'e-5 robotic mission landed a few hours ago on lunar soil and aims to collect samples of rock and dust to bring them back to Earth. The venture targets a site called Mons Rümker, a volcanic complex in a nearby region known as Oceanus Procellarum.The spacecraft's landing module should spend the next few days examining its surroundings and gathering materials from the lunar surface.The intention is to pack about 2 kilos of materials, which will then be sent to a module that can transport the samples to Earth. Alejandro Mundo is a geophysicist, a science teacher at Kingsbridge International High School in Bronx, NY, and a CCRI educator. Even with the pandemic, participation the campaign has been good. Although the number of schools participating and the total number of observations was down from last year, it was still a nice number of each. So far this fall (Northern Hemisphere) spring (Southern Hemisphere) there have been over 3,500 observations from 135 sites (70 schools) across the world. Please see the list below.             Two weeks ago, I attended the ESRI Ocean, Weather and Climate (OWC) Forum. This Forum featured over 30 speakers across two half-days in the forms of lightning talks, keynote speakers and software demos. Although it may not look too different, behind the scenes a lot has changed. Did you know that very soon, a new Earth-observing satellite will join the fleet of satellites that are monitoring the health of our home planet? The launch of the joint U.S.- European Sentinel-6 Michael Freilich satellite is set for November 10! Right now it is undergoing final testing at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, and will be sent aloft on a Falcon 9 rocket. I worked  with a team of four other SEES interns to conduct an investigation into mosquito larvae trapping. We chose to research  the effectiveness of mosquito larvae traps in different geographical areas, as we noticed that many of the interns were having trouble with capturing mosquito larvae in experimental traps. Through my research, I tried to find a connection between plants and mosquitoes, so that humans can find a safe, natural, and aesthetically pleasing way to deter these disease vectors. [July 17 | 05:00 p.m.| PST] We are well within the rainy season in the country and rains are part of our day. Fortunately, we were able to record 2 cloud observations today, one during solar soon and one during a satellite flyover. One curious event we observed was the rain pouring down while it appears to be still sunny.  I think in this case, cloud observation in all directions is important to fully describe the clouds in your area. Aside from that, today is Cloud Art Day here. I gave the GLOBE Cloud Chart to our young citizen scientists to study and have a go with drawing them....

As part of the 2020 GLOBE Virtual Meeting, our NASA Earth Science Education Collaborative team offered a July 15 webinar to highlight opportunities and resources for doing GLOBE science at home this summer and beyond. [July 16 | 02:23 a.m. | PST] Just finished with the GLOBE Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Task Force Meeting. It was very rewarding to see all the work put together by the group presented at last to the GLOBE community. Back to the Cloud Challenge, we started things off by taking 3 cloud observations using the GLOBE Observer App. We then prepared the Cloud Activity Tracker for these youngsters who have been gamely participating in our science-related activities at home since the lock down in our country. A new study using NASA's Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) mission data entitled "Water vapor and soil moisture can predict afternoon rainfall" was recently published in the Geophysical Research Letters journal.  Many of us who use GLOBE protocols have wondered if we could use our data to help us answer some of the most challenging questions related to weather.
