Hello everyone!
I am new to GLOBE (only my 2nd year) and am preparing my students for their research projects for next year. I have a student who is interested in a great project, but being new to the Biosphere protocols (I just received some training on them this past spring), I am not sure how to advise her further. I directed her to the Green Up/Green Down, but not sure where to go from there. Any advice would be much appreciated by my student and me!
Student  project idea:
"I am interested in studying why leaves change colors in different seasons."

Here's a nice post about "Doing Science with a Camera" (https://mynasadata.larc.nasa.gov/science_projects/doing-science-with-a-camera/) which could be used to document & characterize the leaf color by species, time of year, etc.  There are a couple of project ideas listed that could be the spark you need.  Also, translating the question into a testable hypothesis will help determine the method and measurements needed to answer their question.

Phenology is one way characteristic of leaf color, such as https://www.usgs.gov/news/just-how-early-spring-arriving-your-neighborhood-find-out-0

Or, you could also explore leaf color and photosynthesis: https://www.nasa.gov/content/goddard/seeing-photosynthesis-from-space-nasa-scientists-use-satellites-to-measure-plant-health/.  myNASAdata provides an easy way to get the satellite measure of photosynthesis such as this Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) graph that shows less photosynthesis during the summers of 2007 & 2012 for this region.

There is a lot to explore around this question of leaf color. I hope this gives you some ideas.
