GISN & STEM Professionals' Blog
The GISN and STEM Professional's Blog is an online collaborative effort where scientists associated with GLOBE post their thoughts, comments, and philosophies about a variety of science topics.
GLOBE strongly encourages positive and productive discussions to
further advance the scientific understanding of all involved with the
GLOBE Program.

Organizing your AOI and Land Cover Observations
Hello! My name is Sophia and I live in San Diego, California. I
recently finished making all 37 observations for my AOI, which I did
over the course of exactly one week. I took observations almost every
day, spreading out my data-collecting, which I recommend if you start
well before your data deadline so you don’t get too burnt out!
To start, I generated my AOI grid. Make sure to look at your grid
in satellite view to ensure that the vast majority of the
points are accessible. Zoom into each point to see ...

La Nube, El Paso’s science museum, hosted a LEGO summer camp for
elementary level students this past July. The event contained various
science experiments and activities that the physics department from EL
Paso Community College provided, teaching the little ones the basics
on science while having fun.
The contributions from NASA’s GLOBE partner, headquartered at the
Transmountain campus, provided a unique take on LEGO’s. GLOBE at
EPCC-TM provided a satellite imagery activity using LEGOs. Developed
by Holli Kohl, the activity involved using satellite imagery with ...

For my (Area of Interest) AOI project I collected my 37 points using
GLOBE observer, google maps, and a grid creator. These tools made
collecting my data points a lot easier.
To start I plotted where all my AOI points would be based on a
central point. Using CVS and GeoJson files I was able to get all 37
AOI points in that area. When choosing a center point for your grid
you should consider things that will affect your ability to take
photos before placing your center point. Originally I had placed my
AOI points in West Bloomfield but due to the large amount of private ...

I did
my AOI centered at a point near the entrance of my old elementary
school, Wilshire Elementary, in Euless, which is where I live. I
finished my 37 field observations in the span of exactly 7 days. This
allowed me to have more breathing space when collecting my data. When
strategizing a plan to get this done, I decided to keep my process as
simple and efficient as possible while utilizing applications such as
Google My Maps, EarthMap, and the link to generate the CSV and GeoJSON
files for the AOI.
To start, I headed to the application that was provided by ...

As we approach the summer months, we have time to reflect on our
progress with our students thus far, whether it be in an informal or
formal setting. We also can account how we have incorporated GLOBE
resources in our work. Already, we saw various water coolers present
innovative talks on how we can engage participants better, like
utilizing library resources. We saw in the GLOBE Observer CONNECT
series highlight data collected through the GLOBE Observer app and the
results and analysis of the 2024 eclipse event. And as we celebrate
GLOBE’s 30 year anniversary, we can take ...

The Problem
You've got a list of AOI coordinates. Google Maps will show them
to you, but it won't tell you the best order to visit them. If
you’ve got more than a few points, this becomes a mess—guesswork,
wasted time, and unnecessary backtracking.
We need a tool that will plan the most efficient route for us
instead of figuring things out ourselves. That’s what this does,
here’s how:
The Solution
This problem is a textbook example of the classic Traveling
Salesman Problem (TSP): How can we find the shortest route
that visits each ...

EARTH AS A SYSTEM
It was great seeing all of the data that students collected for the
Urban Heat Island Intensive Observation Period in December 2024. I
decided to look at some of the data using a graphing tool called CODAP
from the Concord Consortium. It is easy to use and makes some neat
graphs fast.
First, I downloaded all of the surface temperature data from the
GLOBE website for December using the ADAT system (Advanced Data Access
Tool). There are other ways to get data from the GLOBE data base
including the Vis system and API.
Second, I brought the data into CODAP and clicked on ...

La Nube is El Paso’s newest interactive science museum that opened
this August 2024, and GLOBE’s official partner, the El Paso Community
College (EPCC) and the Gene Roddenberry Planetarium provided fun and
educational activities for a Fall camp for middle schoolers. This
three-day camp provided interactive projects for these young students
to learn more about science. La Nube provided various interactive
demonstrations on atmospheric processes and desert environments. The
Gene Roddenberry Planetarium group headed by Evelyn Maldonado, an

The El Paso Community College (EPCC) – Transmountain campus hosted
3rd Earth Science Day Event on October 16th with the main theme being
Earth Science Everywhere . The aim was to help the public
understand how weather, climate, natural resources and other
geological processes affect our everyday lives and decision making in
the El Paso region.
EPCC embarked on this event in tandem with the American Geosciences
Institute’s (AGI) annual Earth Science Week: a time designated to
promote geoscience awareness across our nation. Here is an excerpt on
AGI’s focus for this ...
