On 28 February (12:00 p.m. EST), GLOBE’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Working Group and NASA Goddard’s Earth Science Diversity and Inclusion (D&I) Group present a talk in celebration of Black History Month, “A Curious Way to Chart the Stars: Afrikan Traditional Insights on Astronomy.”
During the talk, Dr. Imani will share an anecdotal narrative about an encounter between modern Western scientists in Astronomy and elders of the Dogon villages in Africa, suggesting why it is worthwhile to incorporate indigenous systems of knowledge, in this case, Africana, within the processes of traditional scientific inquiry.

About the Speaker
Dr. Nikitah Imani is a Professor of Black Studies at the University of Nebraska-Omaha. Dr. Imani currently serves as Chairperson of the DEI Working Group at NASA, and has previously worked as DEI Consultant at GLOBE Mission EARTH (at Tennessee State University), with the GLOBE Mission EARTH Evaluation Group, and as part of the GLOBE DEI Task Force. Dr. Imani is President and DEO of Faith4Word, a multimedia and educational consulting company, which facilitates DEI program planning and implementation in public organizations. Dr. Imani’s scholarly books and articles concentrate on Africana societies, cultures, spiritualities, and world views, and the implication of these for the African diaspora and the world.
