GLOBE Observer App Users Contribute Astronomical Number of Eclipse Observations

On 21 August, GLOBE Observer App users contributed an astronomical number of solar eclipse observations - over 106,600 observations from nearly 10,500 users! Participating countries included the USA, Canada, Mexico, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Guatemala, Honduras, Panama, and Costa Rica! Click here to check out the data observation contributions from throughout the path of totality and beyond.

The GLOBE Program would like to thank everyone who journeyed out into the field to assist in data collection for this unique experiment, and experience. Your data will improve our understanding of how solar energy is absorbed and reflected in Earth's atmosphere.

GLOBE U.S. Partners: Five-Day Intensive Train-the-Trainer Bootcamp will be Held in New Orleans 06-10 November - Application Deadline 15 September 

A five-day GLOBE Train-the-Trainer (TTT) Bootcamp will be held for U.S. partners in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA, from 06-10 November. The focus will be on implementing GLOBE within highly diverse communities or within schools and informal learning programs that serve traditionally underserved and underrepresented populations in STEM disciplines, including women, minorities, and persons with disabilities.

46th Annual NAAEE Conference (San Juan, Puerto Rico, 18-21 October) Offers Full-Day GLOBE/Eco-schools Workshop - Register for Conference and Workshop Today!

The 46th Annual North American Association for Environmental Education (NAAEE) Conference will be held in San Juan, Puerto Rico, USA, from 18-21 October 2017.

On 18 October, a full-day workshop "The GLOBE Program and Eco-Schools: Science and Sustainability in School Gardens" will be offered. During this interactive hands-on workshop, participants will learn about GLOBE science, Eco-Schools sustainability, and NASA resources. Participants will conduct GLOBE field investigations through an exploration of a local Eco-School's schoolyard habitat and develop an implementation action plan.

Tech Update

A new beta version of the visualization system, with an improved interface optimized for phone and tablet viewing, is now available! Click here to check it out now!

This enhanced system is still being tested and will not officially launch for a few weeks; however, during this beta test phase, you are encouraged to try out the new interface and provide us with comments and/or suggestions. Click here to post your comments!

New features include:

• Larger text size and an interface optimized for phone and tablet viewing;
• The ability to add multiple layers to the map at one time; and
• An improved menu and filter interface.

The current visualization system will remain live while the new system is being tested and reviewed.

NASA STEM Educator Webinars  

The NASA STEM Educator Professional Development Collaborative (EPDC) is presenting a series of webinars open to all educators. All pre-service, K-12, and informal educators, as well as university faculty, are invited to join NASA education specialists to learn about NASA missions, activities, lesson plans, educator guides, and online resources that integrate NASA and STEM into the classroom.

An upcoming webinar, "Cosmology," is geared toward educators in grades 5-8. On Tuesday, 19 September (6:30 p.m. ET) the NASA EPDC at Texas State University is providing a one-hour webinar. Participants will get a historical overview of the varying scientific views about the structure of the observed universe from ancient cultures to current theories. (This webinar addresses Next Generation Science Standards ESS1.A, the Universe and its Stars.)

Internship Opportunity for New York High School STEM Educators at NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies - Apply by 21 September

  

NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, Office of Education, is seeking U.S. high school STEM educators to participate in a year-long NASA climate research initiative located at the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) in New York City. The closing date for applications is 21 September 2017. (In order to participate in this opportunity, applicants should reside within a 50-mile radius of the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies, located in New York City, USA. In addition, educator applicants must be currently employed as full-time STEM educators and also be U.S. citizens.) For more information, click here.

National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) Awards and Recognitions - Entries Must be Submitted by 15 December! 

The annual NSTA Awards and Recognition Program, which recognizes exceptional and innovative science educators, began in 1973. The NSTA Awards and Recognition Program was created to raise awareness and to expose the outstanding work being done in the science education field. All entries must be received by 11:59 p.m. EST on 15 December 2017 (via online submission). There are no entry fees. No training workshops in your area? Check out GLOBE's protocol eTraining! (In order to enter GLOBE data, GLOBE users must complete the necessary training either by attending a GLOBE workshop or by completing the required online eTraining modules. Once your training is complete, you will be ready to start entering your measurements and will be joining a community of thousands teachers around the world!)

 

Time to Get Ready for the 2018 GLOBE International Virtual Science Symposium -- Projects due 01 March

GLOBE Program is pleased to announce the dates of the 2018 GLOBE International Virtual Science Symposium (IVSS). In order to align with the 2018 GLOBE Learning Expedition (GLE), projects will be due on Thursday, 01 March 2018.

On 06 April 2018, feedback from judges and virtual badges will be shared -- and a live drawing for stipends (to help offset the cost of attending the GLE) will take place. More information will be released in the coming weeks and months, so please bookmark this page -- and check back frequently for updates.

Middle and High School Teachers: NASA and GLOBE Have Teamed Up to Create a Supported Atmospheric Investigation! Check Out This Amazing Resource! 

NASA and The GLOBE Program have teamed up to create an Atmospheric Investigation with videos, guides, and extra support. Check it out today!

During this creative scientific investigation, students (grade level 5-8) will carry out a series of learning activities that will enable them to gather data about the Earth and how it functions as a global system. 

The four main components of the module include learning activities, student inquiry investigations using GLOBE protocols, subject matter expert (SME) connections, and a culminating student presentation.

Elementary GLOBE eBooks Now Available for Download!

Elementary GLOBE eBooks are now available for download! They can be read on any computer or mobile device, and there is now a "read-along" option!  Elementary GLOBE is designed to introduce primary (K-4) students to the study of Earth system science. The complete instructional unit includes: 

• Science-based storybooks designed to introduce students to key concepts in climate, water, soil, clouds, seasons, aerosols, and Earth system studies; and
• Classroom learning activities complementing the science content covered in each storybook that are designed to further engage students in GLOBE's five investigation areas.

Used GLOBE's Data Entry App Version 1.3 Yet? Create and Edit Sites Without Active Internet Connection!

 

The GLOBE Data Entry App Version 1.3 is now available -- and it's all about making data entry easy! This latest version of the Data Entry App allows you to create and edit your sites -- even without an active internet connection. This version includes atmosphere, hydrology, and land cover sites. It also adds the ability to take site photos. (This app is intended only for users who have an existing GLOBE account.)

Did you know that the GLOBE website offers a step-by-step video tutorial showing how to set up your school's data site so that you can begin entering data into GLOBE? Well, it does and you can get started today!

Downloads and additional training materials available are:

• A video download the for offline viewing;
• A presentation (used in the video) download for offline use; and/or
• A download that offers a step-by-step guide to walk you through site creation and data entry (PowerPoint or pdf).
