2015 Kilimanjaro Learning Xpedition

On 24 September through1 October 2015, GLOBE returns to the Roof of Africa. Scientists, teachers and students are trekking to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania to collect scientific data in order to evaluate the evolving ecosystem of the largest freestanding mountain in the world. Since 2008, The Xpedition team has been recording vegetation, air temperature, clouds, surface temperature, relative humidity, soil temperature, and several parameters of water on the mountain (pH, electrical conductivity and dissolved oxygen). The data obtained by using GLOBE protocols are entered into the GLOBE database where students and scientists can access them for visualization, analysis, and further research. In addition, on this particular trek, students and teachers will assist with data acquisition for NASA's Soil Moisture Active Passive Mission (SMAP). This satellite measures soil moisture from space, while students collect the same information on the ground. This information is being used to determining how the ecological biomes are shifting and how much the glaciers of Mt. Kilimanjaro are shrinking.

Conditions permitting, the team will answer questions each day, display the data they collect during their journey, and post photos and videos of their ascent and descent.
On 1 October, the Xpedition team will reach the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. Upon their return to the United States, on 8 October, the Xpedition team will participate in a virtual field trip hosted by Discovery Education.
