European Phenology Campaign 2017

Track nature’s Green Wave

During the entire year 2017 the focus will be on phenology campaign in Europe and Eurasia. The 2017 European phenology campaign brings a brand new tool called GrowApp with which students can make a time-lapse movie of how trees change during a season. Simultaneously the students also gather GLOBE phenology and atmosphere data and compare their results to satellite data in the app.

Species

During the campaign we will focus on the following 6 species that are mostly found throughout Europe and Eurasia: oak, beech, birch, hazel, lilac and wild cherry. More information about these species is available at the pheno campaign website.

Using GrowApp and GLOBE learning materials the students can

  • See how the green wave moves over Europe. The GrowApp shows you a satellite image of when the growing season is to be expected at your location.
  • Make time lapse videos and learn how plants react to climatic changes. This is a perfect and easy to use app for biology and geography classes alike.
  • Compare your observations with those taken by other participants.
  • Observe how elevation affects the greening of the vegetation and compare your observations with satellite data and with meteorological measurements.
  • Make learning fun and exciting.

How to participate

  • Visit the campaign website www.globe.gov/web/european-phenology-campaig.
  • Become a member of the European phenology campaign community. You will get updates about the campaign and ideas on how your students can explore nature.
  • Download the GrowApp for Android or iPhone (now in Beta version, final version will be available during March), learning materials and a simple to use Excel tool to analyse your data and to learn how weather and climate affect phenology.
  • Distribute flyers with information on the campaign. The flyer can be downloaded here in docx or in pdf.
  • Find another GLOBE school for collaboration through Discussion Forums.

We look forward to welcoming you to the European Phenology campaign community!
