2018 Southeast Student Research Symposium

Students at 2018 SRS — The Southeast U.S. GLOBE Student Research Symposium took place on 19-20 April 2018 at the University of North Carolina, Charlotte. The Center for STEM Education, Cato College of Education hosted 32 Students and 15 GLOBE teachers. Participants traveled from Puerto Rico, Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama, North Carolina, Louisiana, Georgia, and Arkansas. Students presented a total of 14 GLOBE research projects to their peers and local scientists. Autumn Burdick from SSAI/GLOBE captured the review sessions and student experience through Facebook Live videos and photos taken over the two-day event.

After a welcome from the host and GLOBE Partner, Alisa Wickliff, Center for STEM Education, UNC Charlotte, and Dixon Butler, former Chief Scientist of GLOBE and NASA consultant, who warmly congratulated the students for their accomplishments, the group participated in team-building and icebreaker activities led by Lynne Hehr, a GLOBE Partner from Arkansas. The teams then had dinner at Crown Commons, UNC Charlotte. They interacted with the keynote speaker, Sara Gagné, UNC Charlotte, Geography & Earth Sciences, who spoke about how science can inform policy decisions and influence community discussions in urban environments before returning to the hotel for the evening.

Peer review at the SRS — The following day, while the reviewers (UNC Charlotte faculty, graduate students, GLOBE Partners, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools Science Supervisors, NASA Resource Educator, and more) spoke with the students, teachers participated in professional development on the introductory learning activities for the GLOBE Carbon Cycle materials with the United States Country Coordinator, Jennifer Bourgeault (University of New Hampshire Leitzel Center). After the recognition and close of the official events, students and teachers visited a local aquarium and received a backstage tour to hear how the aquarium maintained its systems and the health of the animals.

Seven GLOBE Partnership representatives, including Garry Harris from Georgia, Lynn Vaughn Reeves from Alabama and Ivan Gill from Louisiana, attended the event in support of the student-teacher teams. Kim Garrett and Sarah Smith, from UNC Charlotte, along with several graduate students from the Center for STEM Education, Cato College of Education, UNC Charlotte assisted in making the event a success.
