IRST Receives NOAA B-WET Grant
The Institute for Research in Science Teaching at SUNY Fredonia has received a NOAA B-WET Great Lakes Grant. This grant is in partnership with the New York State Department of Conservation.
The B-WET grant will allow teachers to be trained in GLOBE Hydrology protocols in support of the Day in the Life of the Lake Erie/Niagara River Watershed event. In this event, GLOBE teachers will be helping their students study their local tributary to Lake Erie. This work builds on the fantastic work of the staff at Reinstein Woods who have held the Day in the Life of the Buffalo River for the past five years.
The inaugural event will occur on October 3, 2019 students will collect water quality data in three sub-watersheds. This experience, paired with free in-school introductory and follow-up lessons led by program partners, will provide students with in-depth knowledge of their watershed, introduce students to science professionals and career options, and provide a “snapshot” of the watershed on one day. Students will be encouraged to prepare analyses of the basin-wide data and share their experience within their community. Educators will guide their students in a final stewardship action project to benefit their local watershed.
