This week's blog is written by Bonnie Banyas , a teacher at Memorial School in Newton, NH . The New Hampshire Education and Environment Team (NHEET) , funded through a state Math Science Partnership grant , was able to support the purchase and installation of a weather shelter at Memorial School (and the other participating schools) and the associated supplies for collecting environmental data. These materials were used to implement field investigation units in several grade levels, centered around the theme for 2016-2017, " Atmosphere, Weather and Climate ." Bonnie generously ...

I do hope that we "see" many of you in our first webinar of Phase III of the ENSO Student Research Campaign as we transition to a focus on collaborating and learning more about water in our environment. Tomorrow evening, Oct. 3rd at 8 pm (ET), we will hear from NASA scientist, John Bolten about the many ways in which NASA studies Earth's water. You might be surprised to know that the NASA Applied Sciences Program has an entire program which focuses on water resources. The Water Resources group organized its projects under five themes: drought, floods, irrigation/evapotranspiration, ...

Just How ‘Cool’ Was The Eclipse? Temperature Data From NASA Langley
Anyone who witnessed the total solar eclipse on August 21st, 2017 would agree--it was an awe-inspiring event. The Sun was blotted out by the Moon, a 360° sunset glowed from every direction. Nocturnal animals like crickets began their night-time activities while people went quiet to watch the stars come out in the middle of the day. Even for those not in the path of totality, the extra-sharp shadows cast by the partially eclipsed Sun and the crescent-shaped lights cast through pinhole projectors, interlaced fingers, ...

It is pretty neat when you can get two for the price of one- as most teachers can attest to with regard to trying to get everything into their curriculum. Did you know that this year, the FIRST LEGO League's challenge is focused on water. And what could be better, as that water is also the theme of this year's ENSO Student Research Campaign !
The LEGO Challenge Project states: "People use water every day, but they don’t think much about how and why they use water. Whether it’s directly (drinking or washing) or indirectly (manufacturing the products they use or producing food ...

We are pleased to share with the whole GLOBE Community; an activity carried out by the students of 5th Year of Provincial School Nº 23 A.R.A. General Belgrano de Maquinista Savio, Escobar, Province of Buenos Aires, accompanied by their teachers to celebrate the Environment day.
Previously selected the site by teachers, on Friday, June 2, 2017, every student on his bike launched the adventure.
Teachers organised different students groups, and each group was identified with the name of Antarctic birds and left the school on their bikes to challenge the prepared ...

One of the things I do as a GLOBE partner is facilitate workshops for educators. When I facilitate a workshop for credit, I always require a short reflection. I use reflection because when teachers, like all of us, stop and think about what they learned the learning is deeper and more relevant. And, candidly, they are more likely to implement GLOBE into their classrooms.
To give participants direction in their reflecting, I use the 4 R model of reflection: review, relate, remark, revise.
- Review. Participants review and summarize one salient aspect of the workshop . ...

I was selected as a National Geographic 2017 Grosvenor Teacher Fellow which is a professional development opportunity that provides educators a rich, immersive experience exploring the world to bring back to their teaching and communities. I and two other educators traveled with Lindblad Expeditions around Svalbard, Greenland and Iceland on the ship the National Geographic Explorer, making stops for excursions along the way.
I decided to do field work on my Grosvenor Teacher Fellowship because 1) that is what one does on an expedition according ...

Nowadays a very important aspect in education is to work in collaboration with other schools and students. It is important to do good planning and set dates for different collaboration activities.
The GLOBE Program provides the opportunity to connect students from all over the world and to work collaboratively with another school.
In several schools this methodology of teaching and communication is being carried out. The experience of participating in collaborative work is very important and one of the points to keep in mind is the connection between the teachers to organize it. ...

Tonight during the ENSO Student Research Campaign Webinar #10 (at 8 pm EST) Dr. Assaf Anyamba will share the results of his research on the impact of these different patterns on the onset of Rift Valley fever in parts of Africa. As we know, these changing weather patterns alter the normal climatic conditions for regions around the world. In some places, this results in ...

GLOBE is a useful resource for educators in both the formal and informal sector. Below is a guest blog post from GLOBE trained educator Jane Amiotte who is the 4H Youth Program Advisor in Pennington County here in South Dakota. One of the things that I think Jane does well is to use GLOBE with other resources and in various settings. GLOBE mixes and matches well!
How do you use GLOBE in your setting?

Heavy rains, floods and thunderstorms have affected thousands of families in Perú since January 14 th , 2017. Apparently, Peruvians were not prepared to face this strong natural events as well as their later consequences: Overpopulation of mosquitos that spread dengue and other diseases as chikungunya virus, reduction of some important crops (rice, banana, yucca, yellow corn, avocado, cotton, asparagus, sugar cane, mango, grapes, alfalfa and lemon) (El Comercio, 2017 a ) and damages in many public facilities (bridges and roads) and private property (houses) - 100000 victims, 157000 houses ...

In the fall of 2016, the students in my Weather and Climate class, GEPL 4490/5490, at the University of Toledo developed projects based on El Nino. The students in class were give the task to look at GLOBE data from a part of the world in which El Nino has an effect. The students were also tasked to do research on El Nino and La Nina to see what it is.
The students looked at the following locations:
Taiwan 2015 – Nicole Jablonski, Bailey Hafner, Cortnee Halpin
Japan 1998 – Sean Smith,
Australia 1998 – Madhusanka Jayawardhana, Josh Coll, and Justin Maluchnik ...

Just when you think that perhaps the weather systems are settling down- our amazing scientific instruments are able to detect a potential change! I never cease to be amazed at what we are able to learn about Earth's systems- both from the ground and from space!
This article from the New York Times just came across my newsfeed- " It's Like it Never Left: Another El Nino May be on the Way ".
In the article, it states that " Among the potential effects are wetter conditions across the southern United States, including Southern California; a drier Midwest; and drought in ...

Concerns regarding the impact of global warming on vector-borne diseases have intensified interest in the relationship between atmospheric factors and dengue fever incidence. Global climate change poses the threat of serious social upheaval, population displacement, economic hardships, and environmental degradation. Changes in temperature, rainfall and relative humidity have potential to enhance vector development, reproductive and biting rates, shorten pathogen incubation period and encourage adult longevity. In addition, changes in wind direction, velocity and frequency will have an ...

Stipend Information
The site set up stipend has been extended a month! If you are a GLOBE trained teacher in South Dakota, set up a site in in the GLOBE database in preparation for data collection in April to receive a $50 stipend.
The site set up can be for any protocol, even one you are currently doing. The only requirement is that you set up a new site. For example, if you are currently monitoring water quality you can set up an additional site for water quality OR you can add another protocol such as land cover , green up/green down , or soil temperature to ...

Usually, scientific issues are difficult to understand, most of the time because they are presented as a collection of facts with a lot of information to be analyzed at the same time that does not allow the student´s learning in easy way, because it is necessary a big memory and reasoning capacity of many elements in a short time. It demands the investment of long time to learn and short time to forget (Negrete and Lartigue 2004).
On the other hand, Storytelling is considered a powerful educative tool because it improves student´s comprenhension about facts, along the ...
