June 2019 U.S. Summary

Each month I create and submit a report detailing the GLOBE happenings shared with me from all over the United States and my activities. These reports usually include GLOBE Partnership updates along with special sections on the Student Research Symposia, communications and projects. As I look back over the year, I thought that perhaps the community would like to know what has been happening too. I spent some time seeing what a monthly blog would look like if I started with those reports…so here is June 2019…one year ago.

Partner News

• There is a new GLOBE Partnership: Saving Our Sons and Daughters International in Georgia.
• The 2017 Partner Yearbook was completed and mailed to all active Partnerships. The Yearbook can be viewed on the GLOBE website: https://www.globe.gov/web/united-states-of-america/home/contact-info/partnership-yearbooks.
• Metropolitan State University Denver Partnership held their annual MULTI workshop 4 – 6 June 2019. The workshop was facilitated by Janelle Johnson and Rich Wagner from the Partnership and Dawn Cummings from Community College of Denver. There were 16 teachers in attendance. GLOBE Partners participated as participant observers including Jennifer Bourgeault from the University of New Hampshire, Mike Jabot from SUNY Fredonia, David Padgett from Tennessee State University, Jennifer Hammonds from National Wildlife Federation, Christi Buffington from University of Alaska Fairbanks, Marilé Colon Robles from NASA Langley and John Ristvey and Kristin Wegner from UCAR. The workshop focused on one GLOBE measurement, the dissolved oxygen protocol.
• The Leitzel Center GLOBE Partnership from the University of New Hampshire held a GLOBE workshop in collaboration with the MULTI NSF-funded project 26-28 June 2019. Ten teachers and 7 participant observers attended.

 US Regional GLOBE Student Research Symposia (SRS)

• The SRS video received 578 views during the NSF 2019 STEM For All Video Showcase. Thirteen people contributed to the online discussion during the event.

• The Northeast/Mid-Atlantic U.S. GLOBE Student Research Symposium (SRS) took place on 31 May through 01 June 2019. The event was hosted by the Boston University Mission Earth Team at Boston University, Boston Massachusetts. Seventy-nine (79) students and 20 GLOBE teachers from Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New Hampshire, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Virginia, and West Virginia attended, with the students presenting a total of 38 GLOBE research projects in a poster presentation session. 

• During the 2019 Regional SRS, 261 students presented a total of 114 GLOBE research projects to their peers and local scientists. These students, along with 66 GLOBE teachers, represented 26 different U.S. states/territories. States new to the SRS this year included Maine, Rhode Island, Virginia, and Washington. Thirty-nine schools uploaded their data to the GLOBE website (up from 13 last year!), and 33 SRS projects have been uploaded to Student Research Reports, under the new SRS tag.

• Thirty-two GLOBE Partners (representing 20 Partnerships), four GIO/SSAI representatives, and scientists from many organizations (including NASA, NOAA, YLACES, and the USDA Forest Service) participated in the SRS.

• Through the generosity of YLACES, 6 regional teams were chosen to receive a $1000 stipend to offset costs of attending the Annual Meeting.

  Other

• I visited the GLOBE Implementation Office (GIO) in Boulder, CO to meet with individuals prior to the MULTI workshop in June.

• The final Carbon Cycle eTraining Module was added to the GLOBE website.

• The U.S. GLOBE Office is helping to plan the North American Regional Meeting (NARM) taking place in October 2019 in Berkeley, CA.
