For many of us within the GLOBE community, this is a joyful season with many celebrations around us. I was lucky to have the opportunity to share about holiday traditions with members from the GLOBE Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Working Group a few days ago. Not only was it interesting to learn about how my colleagues celebrate different holidays, but it was also exciting to find about common traditions among physically distant countries!

Background
Remote working and remote learning presented challenges to us all. As a Master Trainer in Colombia, Juan Felipe Restrepo Mesa faced and overcame his share of challenges when working with a new group of educators from rural areas. Most of the training material and the tests that need to be answered were in English. Today is such a special day! The -new- GLOBE Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Working Group was formed at the beginning of this year and today marked their first presentation at a GLOBE Annual Meeting! On 15 April 2021, Rosalba Giarratano and I were joined by Jillian Anderson (teacher) and Andrew Constantinescu, Alexandra Quiroz, and Ilhum Haque (students) from the Lexington School for the Deaf to learn about American Sign Language (ASL) and some science words in ASL. We were also joined by Lisa Dennett, an ASL interpreter. Today I want to recognize an amazing scientist I have had the opportunity to meet this year. Dr. Bithi De grew up in a rural part of Eastern India. Her parents and family members always encouraged her to pursue her passion for science. And she did! I am so excited! This Thursday April 15 at 10am MT/12pm ET, the GLOBE program will celebrate National American Sign Language (ASL) Day! My friend Jillian Anderson and her students will give us a brief intro to ASL. They will also teach us how to sign some of the terms we use in GLOBE in ASL!
