August 9-11, 2023, Tina Harte Ballinger and Amy Ellisor of the GLOBE Goes to Camp team piloted a GLOBE STEM Camp at Hero Kids Foundation in Suffolk, VA assisted by Isaac Lee the Program Director of Hero Kids. Over 25 campers and 6 YMCA staff from the Armed Services YMCA in Virginia Beach, VA. joined in collecting of cloud, surface temperature, soil, and tree height data through the lens of "Environmental Stewardship". Join summer campers from over 30 camps across the United States as they collect air temperature, soil temperature, surface temperature, and water temperature study over the next two months. Campers will explore relationships between each of the GLOBE temperature protocols as they monitor differences across various microclimates found within their camp and community. In the Toledo area, Dr. C and schools in the area focused on studying artificial turf versus grass soccer and football fields. Artificial turf was much warmer than natural grass. This is combining the GLOBE Urban Heat Island Field Study with research by Vasco Mantas from the University of Coimbra in Portugal and George Xian from the USGS Eros Data Center and the AREN Project with Andy Henry and Geoff Bland. The NASA GLOBE Clouds team is excited to highlight Mr. Gary Popiolkowski, a middle school science teacher at Chartiers-Houston Jr./Sr. High School in Houston, PA, USA. Mr. Popiolkowski has been teaching for 44 years and has been a GLOBE teacher since 1995. He has had his students doing cloud observations for the past 18 years, submitting over 15,000 observations!
