Did you know that NASA satellite data is being used to predict, monitor, and respond to vector-borne and water-related disease around the world? Imagine the value of using both GLOBE ground-based data; such as precipitation, vegetation, soil moisture, surface temperature, and humidity; to help us better understand disease! As you think about what you might like to research for the next school year, consider using NASA satellite data along with your GLOBE data to investigate various aspects of water-related and vector-borne disease. You can learn about the research conducted ...

GLOBE teacher Vicky Gorman and her middle school students have been working hard to help reduce the threat of mosquito-transmitted disease in their region. Before they began to use the Mosquito Habitat Mapper, they did some research to find out which mosquito-transmitted diseases are found in their location. They live in Burlington County, New Jersey, outlined in red below.  Based on a brochure produced by the NJ government about mosquitoes in their state, the students found out that the two most prevalent diseases transmitted by mosquitoes are West Nile virus and Eastern ...

I've been working with a fantastic group from New Hampshire to provide professional development for educators for years. This year, we've spent a considerable amount of time on the pedosphere, from wetland soils to forest and grassland soils. We've talked about why trees go where they do and all the critters, both macro and micro, that spend time in soil. I've listed some of my favorite resources below but please add your own and let's grow the list: NRCS posters, guides, lesson plans and games Training materials from NRCS Traveling Soil Tent: ...

Every year, I offer a field based professional learning opportunity (PLO) for educators. This year's PLO was Exploring Badlands National Park through Science and Storytelling  held June 18-21 in South Dakota. Nine educators spent one day in class and three days and two nights in Badlands National Park doing hydrology field studies using GLOBE protocols (water temperature, water clarity, conductivity and pH) in addition to other opportunities. As part of my own professional learning, I set myself a challenge of trying to tell the story of the field studies in ways other than ...

One of the things I do as a GLOBE partner is facilitate workshops for educators. When I facilitate a workshop for credit, I always require a short reflection. I use reflection because when teachers, like all of us, stop and think about what they learned the learning is deeper and more relevant. And, candidly, they are more likely to implement GLOBE into their classrooms. To give participants direction in their reflecting, I use the 4 R model of reflection: review, relate, remark, revise. - Review. Participants review and summarize one salient aspect of the workshop . ...

Stipend Information The site set up stipend has been extended a month! If you are a GLOBE trained teacher in South Dakota, set up a site in in the GLOBE database in preparation for data collection in April to receive a $50 stipend.  The site set up can be for any protocol, even one you are currently doing. The only requirement is that you set up a new site. For example, if you are currently monitoring water quality you can set up an additional site for water quality OR you can add another protocol such as land cover , green up/green down , or soil temperature to ...

GLOBE Partner the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research Center for Science Education developed 9 classroom activities to help students learn how to analyze GLOBE environmental data while also learning atmospheric science concepts and geography. These new activities have been reviewed by science educators and staff at the GLOBE Implementation Office and, of course, they have been field tested by teachers. I have gathered them up and linked them here. If you are going to the 2017 South Dakota Math and Science Teachers conference in Huron, this is what we will be ...
