Hi All,
We are well into the Urban Heat Island/Surface Temperature Student Research Campaign. Data are coming into the GLOBE website from schools from around the world. To date there have been 43 schools that have uploaded data to the GLOBE website. As I am writing this, there are a total of 596 surface temperature observations taken and entered on the website from December 1 to December 14, 2016. That’s a whole lot of data.

It is exciting that we started a new Urban Heat Island/Surface Temperature Student Research Campaign that was formally knows as the Surface Temperature Field Campaign. I just came across an article from NASA's Earth Observatory that was released yesterday entitled " A Dry Start to South America’s Wet Season ". The article describes the current lack of precipitation in South America, and includes the map below. In this map, we are seeing the accumulated deficit of rainfall that is both flowing onto the surface and accumulating under the ground as of this October.

One of NASA's scientists, Dr. Stephanie Uz, has been working closely with the GLOBE ENSO Campaign throughout its beginning. She is an oceanographer who studies the response of ocean biology to physical forcing through remotely sensed satellite data, in situ measurements, model output and statistical reconstructions using proxies. Participate in the Surface Temperature Field Campaign Dec 1 - Dec 31 and receive a $50 stipend!
Field campaigns are focused data collection events, coordinated in partnership with a scientist or agency, seeking very specific kinds of data.
Every educator who enters a surface temperature data set* by Dec 31, 2016 will receive a $50 stipend. Surface temperature is a simple protocol to do. You still have time to request funds from a mini-grant and order the infrared thermometers if you act soon!

In my few years as a GLOBE partner I've come to realize that GLOBE is a massive organization that sometimes feels to me like it borders on an organism. Apparently the wind belts around the equator flip about once every two years. This past year, NASA found that the flip occurred much earlier than it expected. Watch the short video at this url to learn more about this phenomena and how it might be related to the 2015-16 El Nino event.

I just came across a fascinating article titled " A Tale of Fire and Water- A NASA Scientist's Quest to Understand Rain in Africa ". You can see this article at this link:http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/Features/IchokuRain/. You learn the story of a NASA scientist who grew up in southern Nigeria as a poor refugee child whose family was forced to flee their home because of a civil war that was raging in 1968. Not only is his story inspiring, but the use of various satellite data to explain Dr. Ichoku's research is really fascinating!
