Guiding Investigative Questions for Data Collection and Research As you take tree height and other measurements as part of the campaign, we would like to offer several questions that you might like to answer. These Guiding Investigative Questions can help you with the "Why am I collecting this data and what does my data mean? Where are trees growing and why are they there? What can measuring tree height tell us about our local ecosystem? What is the relationship between tree height and land cover? What are the tools for measuring trees and the errors ...

Understanding our planet's forests is vital to helping us gain knowledge about tree canopies, Earth's carbon budget, biomass estimations, among others. Also, knowing how our planet's forests respond to disasters like fires, blight, and natural disasters is an important facet in knowing how our planet responds to change. Through a combination of satellite and ground-based data collection, the Canadian Forest Service was able to i mprove Canada’s ability to observe, track and study forest disturbances such as wildfires and insect infestations, and how quickly forests grow back after ...

The NASA Ice, Cloud and land Elevation Satellite-2 (ICESat-2) launched from Vandenberg AFB on Saturday, September 15, 2018 at 6:02am PDT. On September 30, 2018, ICESat-2 fired its first laser and on October 3, NASA received the first height measurements from the satellite. A visualization of ICESat-2 data, called a photon cloud, shows the first set of height measurements from the satellite, taken as it orbited over the Antarctic ice sheet. Each blue dot represents a photon detected by the ATLAS instrument. This photon cloud shows the elevation measured by photons in ...

I just updated HoloGLOBE to v1.0.2. For those of you new to this app, HoloGLOBE brings NASA and NOAA visualizations of the Earth to the palm of your hand through augmented reality (AR). You can read more about the app here: http://www.palmyracove.org/InstituteforEarthObservations/HoloGLOBE.aspx In this latest release, I have added play/pause functionality to the MyNASAData module. The MyNASAData is essentially an augmented reality version of GLOBE's Earth System Poster. In addition the new ICESat-2 module has been added. The ICESat-2 module was built by Emme Wiederhold, a ...

Greetings from NASA and the ICESat-2 Satellite Mission,   As you may know, the NASA Ice, Cloud, and land Elevation Satellite-2 (ICESat-2) will launch from the Vandenberg Air Force Base in California on September 15, 2018. ICESat-2 will be a satellite that will use an on-board laser system to measure the height of Earth’s ice, trees, oceans, geographic features, among others.   For several days before the launch, the ICESat-2 Outreach Team will be conducting many pre-launch activities, near the launch site, that showcase the ICESat-2 Mission. One of these events, in ...

As you may know, the NASA Ice, Cloud, and land Elevation Satellite-2 (ICESat-2) will launch on September 15, 2018 from the Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, USA. The ICESat-2 satellite will use an on-board laser altimeter system to measure the height of Earth. Measurements of ice sheets, sea ice, bodies of water, mountains are all part of what ICESat-2 will measure. For our collaboration with The GLOBE Program, we want to focus on one exciting variable that the ICESat-2 satellite will measure, TREE HEIGHT! GLOBE has several ways to measure tree height. You can find them ...

ONE-PAGER FOR FUNDRAISING   The Evaluation Working Group During the Annual Meeting in 2016, the Evaluation Working Group defined a set of goals for the following year, and prioritized some tasks to be developed as part of our work for the community.  One of the objectives we established was to write a one-pager for individuals who want to present themselves when looking for financial support for the GLOBE community, especially for teachers and country coordinators who need economical support from private agencies, companies, ONG’s, to develop typical activities ...

Over the past few years I have been asked how to run a successful international collaboration from school to school. After much thought and reflection I have decided to blog about my experiences and the knowledge I have gained. As an experienced teacher who has had success with multiple International Collaborations, I would advise you and your GLOBE students to start by getting involved in an existing GLOBE campaign online, rather than trying to start a project of your own. This is a great way to get your feet wet before you dive in. Participating in other campaign projects is ...

Written By Vaibhav    Chakraborty New Delhi, India It’s been almost 5 years since I first met these lovely people from Hawkins, Texas at GLOBE conference in New Delhi. At that point if someone would’ve asked me whether it’s a long run friendship or just a temporary meeting, but soon it turned out to be one of the best thing to have happened to me. While working on water and soil protocol as a part of GLOBE project, our respective schools scheduled Skype sessions so that we could exchange our data and be able to measure the differences between our data and draw a ...

GLOBE friends, The Annual Meeting in Colorado is only a few days away! We -the members of the Evaluation Working Group- are really excited about having the opportunity to meet in person again and about having the chance to interact with all of you. Join us for our presentations to see what we have worked on for the past year. Our efforts will be much more targeted and much more effective if you share with us your experience of using GLOBE with your students. We would like to know your success stories, your challenges, your concerns and your suggestions.  At ...

Hello GLOBE friends! The Evaluation Working Group was formed last summer and our first meeting took place during  the GLE in New Delhi, India. The purpose of this group is to get in touch with the people who actually do GLOBE all over the world and find out how the Program works in schools, identify tools, resources and practices, build on the existing experience and provide suggestions that can help its implementation and outcomes. For this purpose, and after having  several teleconferences, we developed a set of questions that were included in the Annual Partner Survey. ...
