Water is essential to life as we know it. Too much or too little water can mean the difference between life and death. While we live on a "water planet" and almost three-quarters of our planet is covered with water, less than 2.5% of that water is actually freshwater. You can read more about Earth's freshwater resources in this article, " Precious Freshness ", and watch the video " Show Me the Water ". See the " Freshwater Availability Toolkit " here for even more great resources.  NASA's "Global Precipitation Measurement" (GPM) mission is measuring how much precipitation is ...

In the GLOBE Clouds protocol and GLOBE Observer app, you can report if your sky is โ€œovercastโ€ or โ€œobscuredโ€. But whatโ€™s the difference? Below are some tips to help! All the photographs featured were collected by observers just like you - Thank you! I found โ€œobscuredโ€ and โ€œovercastโ€ very confusing at first, but when I understood what they meant, things made much more sense. Letโ€™s start by defining them: Overcast – The sky is completely covered by clouds (cloud cover greater than 90%). This means that you will see little or no blue sky. When itโ€™s overcast, you are looking at ...

GLOBE teacher Vicky Gorman and her middle school students have been working hard to help reduce the threat of mosquito-transmitted disease in their region. Before they began to use the Mosquito Habitat Mapper, they did some research to find out which mosquito-transmitted diseases are found in their location. They live in Burlington County, New Jersey, outlined in red below.  Based on a brochure produced by the NJ government about mosquitoes in their state, the students found out that the two most prevalent diseases transmitted by mosquitoes are West Nile virus and Eastern ...

It is the middle of winter here in Maryland, and it is cold!  We had a lot of snow last week, and are expecting more precipitation later this week.  Even though I know we have no active mosquitoes outside, I am still using the GLOBE Observer Mosquito Habitat Mapper.  If you are also living somewhere where mosquitoes aren't currently active, we hope you will consider collecting data as well, so you will be prepared when active mosquito season arrives.   Wondering what kind of data you can collect when there are no active mosquitoes?  Great ...

In GLOBE, there are two major perspectives on the global environment – the spheres and the Earth system. The Teacherโ€™s Guide and the new sphere pages build on the approach that examines Earth as the atmosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere, and pedosphere. The study of Earth System Science focuses on the cycles that connect the spheres – the Energy, Water, and Biogeochemical. The Honor Roll provides recognition of those who report in depth in one area or another. There are three honor rolls recognizing Atmosphere measurement reporting; one for Hydrosphere;, and two each for Biosphere and ...

I just updated HoloGLOBE to v1.0.2. For those of you new to this app, HoloGLOBE brings NASA and NOAA visualizations of the Earth to the palm of your hand through augmented reality (AR). You can read more about the app here: http://www.palmyracove.org/InstituteforEarthObservations/HoloGLOBE.aspx In this latest release, I have added play/pause functionality to the MyNASAData module. The MyNASAData is essentially an augmented reality version of GLOBE's Earth System Poster. In addition the new ICESat-2 module has been added. The ICESat-2 module was built by Emme Wiederhold, a ...
