Trees play such a vital role in the world's science, language, cultures, and customs. Trees, even though they help the Earth regulate its climate, are part of global industry, and serve as habitats for millions of living species, are also vital in the personal lives of millions to potentially billions. The Trees Around the GLOBE Student Research Campaign would like to share a podcast from the United States Geological Survey (USGS) entitled, "Eyes on Earth Episode 21 - Forests of Ghana." From the blog description: " In the West African nation of Ghana, tropical forests are ...

While the Trees Around the GLOBE Student Research Campaign outdoor data collection has been suspended indefinitely in response to the worldwide pandemic, the Trees campaign team has been working tirelessly to shift gears to a safe approach that does not involve field work. With that said, I have put together a video that shows how students, teachers, and citizen scientists can compare existing GLOBE data for tree height and compare it to the tree canopy height data from the NASA Ice, Cloud, and land Elevation Satellite- or ICESat-2 Mission . The online Open ...

March/April/May 2020   What is NASA GLOBE Clouds?  Cloud observations through The GLOBE Program are led by the  NASA  GLOBE Clouds Team at NASA Langley Research Center in Hampton, VA. Every sky and cloud observation submitted through GLOBE Clouds, including through the GLOBE Observer app, is analyzed by the team to determine if it matches satellite data. If there is a match, a personalized NASA email is sent to you comparing your observations with satellites. Your observations and photographs help researchers better understand our atmosphere and how to make ...

You have submitted GLOBE Observer Mosquito Habitat Mapper observations, but are still unsure how to access and analyze that data?  This blog outlines the steps to download data into a spreadsheet, describes the data found in each column, and discusses what to do with the two sets of latitude and longitude data associated with each observation. Download Data First you will need to download your data using GLOBE’s Advanced Data Access Tool (ADAT) . This link also has video and text tutorials to get you started. Once you open ADAT, it prompts you to select filters, which will ...

As you know, April 2020 is all about trees. The NASA GLOBE Observer (NASAGO) is having the Trees Challenge 2020: Make Every Tree Count event for the entire month of April. To celebrate the 50th anniversary of Earth Day and the 25th anniversary of the GLOBE Program, the NASA GLOBE Observer is hosting this month-long citizen science challenge in April 2020. During this challenge, we want to get as many tree height observations from around the GLOBE using the NASAGO App Trees Tool on your mobile devices. If you haven’t downloaded the App yet, please CLICK HERE or type in NASA GLOBE ...

We are asking for photographs of dust storms and dust events in cold climates  (or high latitude areas), southwest United States and Northern Mexico, and desert (or arid and semi arid) areas. Follow these steps on how to take photographs of the horizon, not the sky in the direction of the dust event. Different flyers are now available to print or share that you can use to spread the word!

In this pro tip, you will learn how to increase your location accuracy while using the GLOBE Observer app and learn why location accuracy matters. How is location determined? By using a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver, (either  hand-held or built into your mobile device), you are able to obtain your geographical position on the Earth’s surface. The antennas on your GPS receiver will acquire satellite signals and once it has located three satellites, it will perform a first calculation of latitude and longitude.  For the GLOBE Observer Land Cover tool, ...

I bet you would be surprised to learn that since we began to collect " Mosquito Habitat Mappe r" data (5/29/2017), we have had over 20,915 observations submitted! Think about how significant that number is for a tool that has only been available for less than three years!  As many of us who live in the northern hemisphere begin to see signs of spring arriving- robins, crocuses, leaf buds on the trees, and warmer weather- we know that we will also see adult mosquitoes before too long. While there are over 3,500 species of mosquitoes, only about 100 of those species are actually ...
