On May 28, 2019, NASA released ICESat-2 data through the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC). This height data shows the elevation of ice sheets, sea ice, bodies of water, trees and forests, and much more. What we want for this campaign is to be able to compare student and citizen science tree height data to the ICESat-2 mission tree height data. Although the data is now public, it may not be in a form that is easily used for our comparisons, yet. We will be working with ICESat-2 scientists to determine the best way for us to use the data. Check out some of the tree height and ...

Our team has received several questions about what to do when mosquitoes are found in a natural habitat, such as an estuary or a wetland.  When you use the Mosquito Habitat Mapper and your mosquito observations are finally logged, you are then prompted to do Step 4, “Eliminating Mosquito Breeding Habitat. By dumping or treating water you can significantly decrease the spread of mosquitoes.” It’s important to clarify that Step 4 is referring to artificial or natural containers and human created water impoundments. Examples of water impoundments include things such as stock and ...

I am pleased to announce that the Institute for Earth Observation’s at Palmyra Cove’s Innovation Lab is developing a virtual reality experience called Lunar Learning Expeditions that will allow visitors to explore the lunar surface. The first release models the Apollo 11 moon landing site where visitors can perform some of the early experiments as part of the Early Apollo Scientific Experiments Package (EASEP). Within virtual reality, visitors will experience a view from inside a space suit as they perform mission tasks. In-game spectator cameras will allow visitors who are waiting in ...

With the beginning of the mosquito season comes the need for protecting individuals and communities from mosquitoes. When you use the GLOBE Observer Mosquito Habitat Mapper tool, you are not only providing useful surveillance information about when and where mosquitoes are found: you also are providing an important public service known as “source reduction.”  Take a look around your home, park and school to see where you can reduce mosquito breeding in your neighborhood: Remove all unnecessary containers where water can accidentally accumulate. Make sure water in pet bowls ...

GLOBE teacher Vicky Gorman and her middle school students have been working hard to help reduce the threat of mosquito-transmitted disease in their region. Before they began to use the Mosquito Habitat Mapper, they did some research to find out which mosquito-transmitted diseases are found in their location. They live in Burlington County, New Jersey, outlined in red below.  Based on a brochure produced by the NJ government about mosquitoes in their state, the students found out that the two most prevalent diseases transmitted by mosquitoes are West Nile virus and Eastern ...

Check out this awesome resource, by the Forest Service, about trees, forests, climate change, and technology. NATIONAL INQUIRER CLIMATE CHANGE EDITION "Scientists report their research in journals, which are special booklets that enable scientists to share information with one another. This journal, the Natural Inquirer, was created so that scientists can share their research with you and with other middle school students. Each article tells you about scientific research conducted by scientists in the Forest Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture." "If you want to know more ...

Across the Public Lab community, people are making their own maps using aerial photos (by  balloon mapping ,  kite mapping , and the like) with the  MapKnitter website  - which helps people "stitch" or "knit" images into a combined map, using an existing satellite map base layer as a reference. (this post was cross-posted  on the Public Lab blog ) The core of  MapKnitter's  interface, the  Leaflet.DistortableImage library , is seeing some new life as members of  our coding community  have started to dig in and make improvements! ...

Have app, will travel! I am reporting from the field, the campus of the University of Hawaii, Manoa (UHM). I am meeting with citizen scientists here who are collecting data using the GLOBE Observer app. I had the good fortune to meet Dr. Floyd Reed, a professor in the Department of Biology. His lab is involved in modifying strains of Culex mosquitoes so that they are unable to transmit avian (bird) malaria, a disease responsible for the ongoing extinction of many of Hawai’i’s native bird species. Dr. Reed agreed to go out and collect mosquitoes with us this morning, using the GLOBE ...

Patchara Pongmanawut , a GLOBE teacher at the Princess Chulabhorn Science High School in the Trang Province in Thailand, has been doing fantastic work with her students.  These students have been at the top of the Mosquito Habitat Mapper Honor Roll for the past month, and show no sign of slowing down!     "In Thailand, there are many mosquito-borne diseases such as dengue, chikungunya, malaria, Japanese encephalitis, West Nile fever, St. Louis encephalitis, filariasis and Zika", Pongmanawut says. This has really inspired her and her students to go ...

Guiding Investigative Questions for Data Collection and Research As you take tree height and other measurements as part of the campaign, we would like to offer several questions that you might like to answer. These Guiding Investigative Questions can help you with the "Why am I collecting this data and what does my data mean? Where are trees growing and why are they there? What can measuring tree height tell us about our local ecosystem? What is the relationship between tree height and land cover? What are the tools for measuring trees and the errors ...
