While in Thailand, last month Peter and I met one of Kris and Mullica’s graduate students, who is involved with the regular collection of GLOBE weather data and is learning about the ENSO cycle. He and I chatted a lot about what he is doing, and he took us to see one of the automated weather stations that is situated in a mountain village about 30 minutes out of Nakhom Si Thammarat.  We had gotten to this southern part of Thailand about a week after some very serious flooding had killed 38 people, devastated many homes and villages, and had even shut the airport down- which had ...

Happy snow day from New Hampshire! Today was a perfect day for me to send out the first email message to 48 subscribed GLOBE teachers through the SRS list AND update the U.S. GLOBE Twitter profile. The picture on our Twitter profile is one I captured at the GLOBE Annual Meeting in Estes Park, CO. Not a bad place for field work. Subscribers to the United States GLOBE SRS Weekly update list received this message: http://eepurl.com/cAuwIv. U.S. GLOBE teachers, if you are considering attending a regional SRS, I highly recommend you join the list to stay updated!

It was great to see the GLOBE presence at the AMS Annual Meeting in Seattle last week. Monday, the Symposium on Education is focused on K12 initiatives. The morning sessions all focused on GLOBE related activities and projects that included the NASA Mission Earth Project, GOES-R/16, the new Elementary GLOBE Climate book, and the International Virtual Science Fair. The new GLOBE Cloud app was presented in the afternoon. There were several projects presented in the Education Poster session as well. It would be great to see even more presentations of all the innovative and ...

As you know, the ENSO phenomenon affect the entire planet. Check out this great video from the Australian Government Bureau of Meteorology. In this video, you will see the extremes that ENSO brings to all corners of Australia. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dzat16LMtQk Are the affects of ENSO in your country the same or different than in Australia? Try to draw some conclusions based upon your data and other data from around your home country.

GLOBE Partner the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research Center for Science Education developed 9 classroom activities to help students learn how to analyze GLOBE environmental data while also learning atmospheric science concepts and geography. These new activities have been reviewed by science educators and staff at the GLOBE Implementation Office and, of course, they have been field tested by teachers. I have gathered them up and linked them here. If you are going to the 2017 South Dakota Math and Science Teachers conference in Huron, this is what we will be ...
